South Woodham Focus
There is a prayer which is attributed to Sir Francis Drake the sixteenth century sailor who was one
of the earliest people to sail round the world and show it was a globe and not flat with edges that
you could fall off. He said that in all walks of life "it is not the beginning, but the continuing of the
same, until it is thoroughly finished, that yieldeth true glory". A beginning is usually prompted by
a good intention. I would be very surprised if you couldn't think of something, probably several
things, that you started but didn't complete. Learning to play a musical instument, participating in
a new sport, training to develop a new skill, pushing yourself to overcome a fear, and the list goes
on!. Perhaps today we have too many distractions that cause us to give up, to loose heart, to look
for a reason to stop.
The list of things you might have started but given up isn't always an indication of a failure. Often it is a recognition
that you were not cut out to do that thing. Sometimes we don't know what we are able to do until we try it. Other
times we try it and carry on until our body or our mind recognises that it is just not for us. That's fine. At least you
tried. Well done. But how about those things that you started, could have carried on, but gave up. Was it a lack of
interest? Was it perhaps a lack of encouragement from friends and family? Was it because you couldn't afford to
carry on? Was it because the support you needed was no longer there? Or was it simply a case of you were too old
to carry on? These are all valid reasons for not finishing.
But then there are those things in life that we start and give up when we shouldn't. These are the things we need
to question ourselves about. Some will be simple, even superficial, but others will be deep, and what is more affect
someone else or a range of people. We give them up for a selfish reason. We don't consider the effect on others. A
friendship, a relationship, an activity that gives joy, help and assistance, support, comfort to others. Is it more
important to satisfy ourselves than to think of the effect on those around us? And how many have given up their
faith in the living God, the Lord Jesus. There is NO EXCUSE for giving Him up. The amazing thing is God allows you
always to re-start where you left off.
