Of this number, 1,335 went to children. The foodbank, a member of The Trussell Trust’s network which has today reported a UK-wide increase foodbank use, believes the local increase is due to people struggling with continued issues with benefit payments, insecure or low paid work and debt. As part of a national network campaigning for change, the foodbank is working hard to offer practical emergency support to help prevent people affected going hungry, whilst simultaneously participating in vital research and raising awareness about the issues local people are facing. Ruth Leverett, Foodbank Manager of Chelmsford Foodbank said: “We don’t want to be here forever. No one in Chelmsford should need a foodbank’s help and we want to see an end to local people needing emergency food at all. It doesn’t have to be this way - with a benefits system that catches people before they fall into crisis, and secure work that provides people with enough money to cover the cost of essentials, this is possible. But until that time, we’ll continue to provide vital support when it matters most - we’re dedicated to ensuring that people in our community with no money for food are able to access emergency support, and that has only been possible in the last year because of the incredible generosity shown by local people in donating food, time and funds. Thank you.” The running costs for the foodbank are around £18,000 a year, all of which is raised locally to enable them to continue their work. Costs include warehouse space, to sort and stock donated food, a van to pick up donated food and deliver to distribution centres, and other overheads like utilities and insurances. The foodbank welcomes any new offers of help with funding – local businesses, organisations and individuals interested in supporting the foodbank’s work can find out more at www.chelmsford.foodbank.org.uk Changes to your "Kind of Blue" diary. Due to the impending Spring Bank holiday, "Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz group, will be performing in the "Bell" public house, Woodham Ferrers on Monday 21st May, 8.30-11pm (not the usual last Monday of the month). Enjoy a summer's evening in a friendly hostelry listening to the music which emanated from a confident USA in the mid 20th century. Sandwiches and entry are free. If you are unable to come to this, we will repeat another "Jazz on a summer's day with afternoon tea", which was so successful last year, on June 10th (2.30-4.30) Entry will be limited by an £8 ticket only (proceeds to breast cancer). South Woodham Focus 23 OVER TO YOU..... MORE CHOICE! GLUT OF FELINE FRIENDS To the sympathetic Downleaze resident regarding a glut of feline friends. This is ‘catastrophic’ behaviour by these rogue felines and I’m interested to know what laws they are breaking. I have considered punishment of ‘cat o nine tails’ may be appropriate and if this is not effective, the ‘cat snip’ I can ‘categorically’ say no cats were punished during the writing of this letter . Kat CONCERNED! I am concerned by the behaviour of a group of boys, approx. 13 years old in Woodham riding round the town being abusive. Last night one of them with red hair was showing his middle finger to passing drivers. If the parents could have a word before the police or members of the public become involved. This isn’t the first time I have seen this group showing this type of behaviour. Spring has Sprung at Hyde Hall! Friends Theresa Halloran (left ) and Julie Baker (right), from Wickford, enjoying a day out at RHS Garden Hyde, where after weeks of cool weather, the warmer temperatures and sunshine this have seen a rush of blooms and blossom making it a perfect place to enjoy a stroll and bite to eat. So this new development will contain a new supermarket called Sainsburys and monopoly here from Adsa will end. Oh No!, wait hold the press, put down that cup of coffee, the monopoly will continue here as Asda and Sainsburys are merging. Come on other Supermarkets, give us a choice here and oust them from this development so we can have a Tesco, or Waitrose, Co op, or a range of traditional shops like Fruit and Veg ones, Butchers, Bakers, and maybe Candlestick makers, old school style back then! A SWF Resident. A Massive Thank You Claire, Debbie & Seema would like to thank everyone enormously for their kind generosity at the Quiz Night held on Friday 27th April at SWF Rugby Club. The evening raised an amazing £680 which will go towards our fundraising for the Walk the Walk Charity as we are taking part in the London Moonwalk on Saturday 12th May, power-walking 26.2 miles, overnight in our bras(!), for breast cancer. Thank you to everyone who came along, donated, played our silly games and made the evening so fun and enjoyable, it really is very much appreciated.
