NEWS FROM ST. MARY’S CHURCH, WOODHAM FERRERS
It’s a busy time at St. Mary’s Church prompting me to let people
know the latest news and dates for your diary.
On June 2nd we are holding a Churchyard Tidy Up session from
10 – 12 noon. Everyone is welcome to come along with their
gardening tools, petrol mowers and strimmers or perhaps help
rub down and oil one of our benches. We will provide a warm
welcome and refreshments to all comers. There is another Tidy
Up day scheduled for September 29th also between 10 and 12
noon if you want to organise your diary well in advance.
St. Mary’s recently completed some more tree work in the
Churchyard. We have saved the logs which are seasoning nicely
and will be available in October at £70 a load
delivered. All proceeds go into the Friends of
St. Mary’s fund to support the upkeep of the
fabric.
Due to the beautiful display of bulbs and the
wet weather the grass is always a bit longer
throughout April and May and it seems to grow
while we are watching it. St. Mary’s benefits
from regular Community Payback team visits to
help with the maintenance. We schedule these
visits from month to month and if anyone
would be interested in joining us on these days
please get in touch so I can notify you when the
next date is. We continue to work hard to bring
the Churchyard back within the Diocesan
regulations. Gardens are not permitted, just
grass, bulbs and fresh flowers. Wreaths can be
placed on the anniversary of a loved ones
passing as well as at Christmas and Easter. By
enforcing these regulations the Churchyard is a
tidier and safer place to visit. There is further
guidance on the Diocesan regulations in the
Church Porch and I am always happy to discuss this further.
On July 7th we will be delighted to welcome the Essex Police
Choir to perform. The concert starts at 7.30 p.m. – 10 p.m.
During the interval homemade refreshments will be served
when our local accordion player Keith Taylor has agreed to
serenade us again. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children
under 12 or members of Friends of St. Mary’s. For further details

Funds raised will go towards the Bell tower restoration project.
St. Mary’s was delighted to recently receive a grant of £500 from
Allchurches Trust towards the cost of our replacement lead
alarm. The lead alarm is necessary to be insurance compliant
and offers excellent protection. The latest model is a significant
upgrade on the old one which was at the end of its useful life.
St. Mary’s continues to open on a Tuesday morning from 10 – 12
noon while the cleaning team get busy. Once again we
welcome visitors and serve refreshments. The church will also be
open for the first Sunday afternoons in the months of June, July,
August and September followed by an Evensong service.

To help raise additional funds St. Mary’s continues to collect
inkjet cartridges, old mobile phones, laser and toner cartridges.
There is a recycling box in the Church. We just received our first
payment of £28 from Recycle4Charity for inkjet cartridges. This
week I have posted our first batch of 21 phones to them. You
can find out more about this scheme on line. So if you can lay
your hands on any of these items we would love to hear from
you. If you can’t get to church we will be happy to collect them.
