Enhanced beauty through the use of industry
models in magazines, illustrates a belief in the
importance of attraction within its audience.
This links to an established psychological
approach – the ‘humanistic approach’.
Psychologists, such as Carl Rogers, developed
the idea of the ‘actual self ’ and the ‘ideal self ’ to
explain basic human functioning. The actual self
is the individual’s perception of themselves based
on their experiences and lifestyle, whereas the
ideal self is what they strive to become. Rogers
explained that if the individual could maintain
a consistency between these two (congruence)
it would lead to a healthy well-being, however
if the ideal self is unobtainable (incongruence),
it would lead to low self-esteem and low selfworth.
This can be applied to fashion media, as
their idea of what an identity consists of, is an
unrealistic goal, leading to incongruence and
their audience feeling maladjusted. – (Rogers,
