greater in degree are bound to follow. <strong>The</strong> bottom<br />

has not yet been reached.<br />

But it is argued that <strong>the</strong>re will be anarchy in <strong>the</strong><br />

islands unless <strong>the</strong> people <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> are ruled by us. It<br />

is said by many that all <strong>the</strong>y want to do is to give<br />

liberty to <strong>the</strong>se poor, ignorant people, who do not<br />

know enough to have it for and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves. This<br />

has ever been <strong>the</strong> argument <strong>of</strong> tyrants. This was <strong>the</strong><br />

argument made by King George III, when <strong>the</strong><br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>rs were struggling for <strong>the</strong>ir independence.<br />

Here are his exact words:--<br />

“I am desirous <strong>of</strong> restoring to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong><br />

blessings <strong>of</strong> law and liberty equally enjoyed by<br />

every British subject, which <strong>the</strong>y have fatally and<br />

desperately exchanged for <strong>the</strong> calamities <strong>of</strong> war<br />

and <strong>the</strong> arbitrary tyranny <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir chiefs.”<br />

“Chiefs” was <strong>the</strong> title applied by <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong><br />

Great Britain to Washington, Jefferson, Madison,<br />

Adams, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> revolutionists;<br />

and “chiefs” is <strong>the</strong> title applied by senators to<br />
