All <strong>of</strong> this is good doctrine. It is <strong>the</strong> best kind<br />

<strong>of</strong> civil government gospel. It is <strong>the</strong> enunciating <strong>of</strong><br />

principles which are immortal, and which will<br />

stand as long as time itself. And it can never be<br />

remembered too <strong>of</strong>ten, that it was in defense <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se principles so ably told by Abraham Lincoln<br />

that tens <strong>of</strong> thousands shed <strong>the</strong>ir blood upon <strong>the</strong><br />

field <strong>of</strong> battle in <strong>the</strong> Civil war. This was clearly<br />

seen and recognized by <strong>the</strong> leaders at that time.<br />

<strong>The</strong> blare <strong>of</strong> battle and reek <strong>of</strong> carnage seem to last<br />

longer in <strong>the</strong> minds <strong>of</strong> most men than <strong>the</strong> principles<br />

over which <strong>the</strong> battles were fought. Never<strong>the</strong>less it<br />

is <strong>the</strong> principles which should interest all, for <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are <strong>of</strong> vital importance to all.<br />

In ano<strong>the</strong>r speech delivered in Chicago, Ill.,<br />

July 10, 1858, Lincoln fur<strong>the</strong>r amplified his<br />

comments upon <strong>the</strong> Declaration <strong>of</strong> Independence<br />

as follows:--<br />

“We are now a mighty nation; we are thirty, or<br />
