“<strong>The</strong> grounds for such intervention may be<br />

briefly summarized as follows:--<br />

“First. In <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> humanity, and to put an<br />

end to <strong>the</strong> barbarities, bloodshed, starvation, and<br />

horrible miseries now existing <strong>the</strong>re, and which <strong>the</strong><br />

parties to <strong>the</strong> conflict are ei<strong>the</strong>r unable or unwilling<br />

to stop or mitigate. It is no answer to say this is all<br />

in ano<strong>the</strong>r country, belonging to ano<strong>the</strong>r nation,<br />

and is <strong>the</strong>refore none <strong>of</strong> our business. It. is<br />

especially our duty, for it is right at our door.”<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r nations declared that <strong>America</strong> had<br />

sinister designs. Such insinuations were repudiated<br />

with contempt. Daily was defiance hurled at all<br />

maligners. We boldly told <strong>the</strong> world that this was<br />

not a war for territorial aggrandizement; that we<br />

wanted nothing save only that a suffering people<br />

should go free. Even as late as last October, at <strong>the</strong><br />

Peace Jubilee in Chicago, President McKinley<br />

said:--<br />
