suffice it to say that <strong>the</strong> same course <strong>of</strong> treachery,<br />

duplicity, and base perfidy which had marked <strong>the</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong> Rome in o<strong>the</strong>r cases also marked her trail<br />

in this one. Achaia was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last allies <strong>of</strong><br />

Rome, in whose behalf she had entered upon war<br />

“solely in <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> humanity,” but with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

enemies or friends, as <strong>the</strong> case might be, disposed<br />

<strong>of</strong>, it was decided that her hour for destruction was<br />

now arrived. <strong>The</strong> Achaian league was dissolved,<br />

and Greece was henceforth treated as a province,<br />

was subjected to tribute, and was governed by a<br />

Roman proconsul, or prætor.<br />

Such are <strong>the</strong> military facts connected with <strong>the</strong><br />

story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “expansion” and “imperialism” <strong>of</strong><br />

Rome. Upon <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> historian Rollin has written<br />

some “Reflections on <strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Romans<br />

with regard to <strong>the</strong> Græcian states, and <strong>the</strong> kings<br />

both <strong>of</strong> Europe and Asia.” His reflections contain<br />

<strong>the</strong> wisest philosophy on <strong>the</strong>se events that <strong>the</strong><br />

writer has ever discovered. His words are full <strong>of</strong><br />

instruction concerning that time; but <strong>the</strong>y are also<br />
