Sarah Bennett PGA Fellow Professional held a special event for the young
juniors and their family members at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club
where she is Head Teaching Professional.
This was the first time the players had ventured to the course which was
held over 4 shortened holes to accommodate age related distance. There
was an hour of group coaching prior the course competition which the
parents joined in with too.
Sarah has vast experience of coaching juniors both as a 1-2-1 basis and
within a group environment, the County Academy Programme ignited
her interest which progressed to her Golfing Girls Junior group sessions,
the first of it’s kind in Essex.
She has hosted and delivered sessions as the County Coach for the Girls
Development Squad, however the important starting point is at Grass
SWF CC U15s Knights vs
Hatfield Peverel U15s Panthers
(SWF 70-2, Hatfield Peverel 113-1)
The U15s first appearance at home this season was a Friday day-night
game against a strong Hatfield Peverel team. With many of the boys
already exhausted from 2 hours of Fortnight and Uno after school it was
decided to shorten the game from 20 to 16 overs aside.
The team this week included Ross making his debut, and Luke and Jake
their first appearances of the season (get well soon to unlucky Marcello
side-lined by injury).
With the splendid SWF Cricket Pavilion glistening like a marble palace in
the sunshine, and a record attendance of around 5,000 lucky spectators
crammed into the magnificent Saltcoats Cricket Arena the Hatfield
Peverel team batted first.
An early wicket from Ben C raised the hope of an early batting collapse
from the Panthers, but despite tight bowling from Dan, Nathan, Ryan,
Ben S and Josh, the Panthers somehow scraped and edged their way to
113 off 16 overs. The pressure of the excellent SWF bowling and fielding
(William in particular showing the strength of his throwing arm) forcing
2 members of their team to actually retire just as they coincidently
reached 30 runs.
With the Panthers manager deciding it was better to crack on with the
match rather than take the customary tea break, this left the Knights at
a disadvantage as they plan for and depend on the mid-match break to
re-fuel on their specially prepared and nutritionally balanced diet of
muffins and crisps washed down by orange squash with added sugar.
Despite this the Knights took to the field determined to give it a go in the
gathering gloom. Despite a solid mix of defence and attack from Ben C
and Ryan, the Panthers then took a couple of early wickets. Ben S and
Tom then battled their way through in a great unbroken partnership
until the last over with Ben S recording his highest score to date and a
not out. When Tom retired in the final over their diligence meant only 44
runs were required off the last 2 balls to win the game, and with Luke
arriving at the wicket hopes were high. Unfortunately, it was not to be,
and the game was stolen by the Panthers at the last as the Knights were
unable to either hit the required 11 fours off 2 balls or run them at just
slightly over the speed of sound.
Despite the loss another fantastic all-round performance by the Knights
who continue to improve each week and another game where they
batted through their overs with wickets to spare.
Thanks to Tom, Amy, Adrian and Paul from the club, and to the many
parents and siblings who contributed tonight to putting up the pavilion
and preparing the beverages and food.
Team today was William, Ross, Luke, Jake, Nathan, Ben C, Tom, Josh,
Dan, Ryan, Ben S.
JUNIOR PARENT SUMMER SPECIAL
Roots and club level which Sarah has is growing.
Sarah instigated the Junior Jubilees © group which is held on a 4 week
blocks each Saturday between 1pm-3pm which are pre- bookable to
avoid disappointment. Sarah utilises her knowledge to cover a variety of
areas within a safe and structured session.
“My aim is to develop our young players to ensure their playing
experience of the game is introduced early on within their interest of
playing golf. There are many more opportunities but as a Coach it is
important to make all sessions and activities productive and enjoyable.
The National “push” on introducing new players to the game is at it’s
highest and with Major Events round the corner and improved weather,
what better time than now”
The feedback from the parents and juniors was fantastic with one
youngster apparently would not stop talking about the day on the way
home. This was obvious by the way the juniors headed straight to the
putting green after the few holes, the only lure to the patio was the
prize giving!
This event has been active for 5 years now and will enable the family to
become involved together with hopefully the Mum’s joining in too.
Sarah is one of two TPI Junior Certified Coaches in Essex and holds the
elite status of a Fellowship which currently makes up just 3% of the PGA
Membership within the UK.
I am passionate about all sectors of the game but nothing beats the
smiling faces of our juniors after the session.
