In the Past The Aboriginal Flag (page 13) Who is This? (page 14) Indicator: Aboriginal Life Today Teachers Notes Recognises that Aboriginal people respect their heritage and culture. This section discusses the history of Aboriginal people in Australia. It endeavours to show students how traditional Aboriginal people live in Australia today, and how they have kept their culture alive. Aboriginal people of Australia believe their ancestral beings were responsible for creating the world as we know it today. Records show that Aboriginal people have been living in Australia for about 40 000 years. Australia is a multicultural society; There are people from many cultures living here. Many Aboriginal people live in Australia. Some are still living a traditional life, while others live in towns and cities. Traditional Aboriginal people had a system called the kinship system, which was a way for them to identify, approach and treat others in their group. Although this system may seem complicated, Aboriginal people learnt and followed the kinship system without any fuss. There are Aboriginal people living in Australia today who still live by the kinship system. Many Aboriginal people living in communities still live by the traditional ways, where the kinship system is very much a part of everyday life and traditional laws are followed. There are many Aboriginal people who have been very successful in their chosen fields. Some are well-known Aboriginal Australians and others are just everyday citizens. The one thing these people all have in common is their heritage and respect for their culture. • Display an Australian flag or a picture of one. Discuss why we need a flag and what it represents. • Show a picture of the Aboriginal flag; tell the students its significance to Aboriginal people and what it represents. (The red represent the earth, the black represents the Aboriginal people and the yellow represents the sun.) • Show the class pictures of well-known Aboriginal Australians, such as Ernie Dingo or Cathy Freeman. (You can usually find these in magazines.) • Ask what these people have in common. (They are all Aboriginal.) • Inform the students they also live in Australia, and there are many Aboriginal people living in Australia. • Both the ‘Aboriginal Flag’ and ‘Who is This?’ worksheets support this lesson. Page 13 – Students could use crayons, paint or materials such as crepe paper or cut-up coloured squares of paper to decorate the flag. (The top rectangle is black, the bottom rectangle is red and the circle is yellow.) Page 14 – Students cut out the picture squares with numbers at the bottom of the page and glue them onto the matching number to make Ernie Dingo’s face. ©R.I.C.
