In the Past Barbara Dalgetty (page 19) Aboriginal Life Today Teachers Notes • Make a list of well-known and less well-known Aboriginal people on the board. Say the name first and then ask the students to name each after you. • Ask ‘What do all these people have in common?’ (Some students know they are all Aboriginal people.) Accept all answers and discuss them. • Indicate to students that all these people live in Australia. • Read the story on Barbara Dalgetty to the students. Encourage the students to share their feelings about the story. • Go through the worksheet with the class and complete it. Story Barbara Dalgetty lives in Geraldton, Western Australia. She is an Aboriginal who has lived in Australia all of her life. Barbara works at a primary school. Her role is Aboriginal Education Worker. This means Barbara works with Aboriginal children, helping them with their learning. Barbara also works with the parents and tells them how their children are doing at school. Barbara supports the teacher by gathering important information about the Aboriginal culture and passing this on to the teacher. A special time at most schools is Naidoc Week. This is when the whole school and community participate in different activities based on the Aboriginal culture, such as painting, singing, dancing and cooking. Answers 2.
