Report from the Chairman As the post 9-11 transformation of the airline industry continues, America’s regional airlines have prospered by continuing to create value for their customers—both major airline partners and individual passengers—through safe, efficient and reliable operations which connect virtually every community in North America to each other and to the world. Working together with our employees and suppliers, we’ve been able to enhance our offerings during this season of change in the industry, providing more service and greater price competition to cities large and small throughout North America. The Regional Airline Association plays a strategic role in the industry’s success by supporting our 43 member airlines, which now transport one out of every five domestic passengers. The organization is a critical force in shaping regulatory and legislative issues that affect our operations throughout the United States and increasingly in international markets. As the collective voice of the regional airlines, RAA continues its work with the federal agencies and on the Hill in safety, regulatory and technology issues and the preservation of air service to small and midsize communities that otherwise would not have access to the national air transportation system. Over the next 18 months, we will be called on to speak to many issues and policy matters that will have major bearing on our future as an industry. Of them, the reauthorization of the FAA Airport and Airways Trust Fund is undoubtedly the most significant and arguably among the most complex to resolve. That said, there is no question that, along with ensuring adequate funding, any new approach must provide a means for FAA and DOT to increase airport capacity and modernize the air traffic control systems in order to support forecasted growth in passenger demand, a growing percentage of which will be served by regional airlines. I encourage every industry leader, whether airline or supplier, to follow these developments closely and to respond to RAA’s request for support if called upon to reinforce an industry view to your elected representatives. I would be remiss if I did not recognize and thank the Associate Member Council (AMC) for their continued partnership to achieve the industry’s objectives. The AMC has worked hard to build support from our supplier partners and this year achieved some important milestones with the first awards of the RAA scholarship and seminars focused on best practices. I want to thank AMC Chairman Steve Alexandris for his efforts to forward this group’s goals in the interest of our more than 240 associate members. It has been an honor to serve as the 2006 RAA Chairman, and I greatly appreciate the work of the RAA Board and our talented staff in Washington, DC. My thanks also to the airline and associate members who have offered assistance in support of our work with Congress, the regulatory agencies, the media and the traveling public as we seek to educate them about the important, vital role the regional airlines play in our nations’ air transportation system, in the economy and in the well being of the communities we serve.
