possesses an immortal spirit. On death that spirit
passes either into eternal blessedness or an
eternal condemnation. Darwinian evolution
reduces man to just an advanced animal, whose
existence is ultimately no more than a chance
occurrence, but a man will live for evermore in
heavenly glory, if, in this life, he turns from sin
and believes in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Tylers Green Methodist Church
We had a packed church at Pentecost when we
also celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Tylers
Green Methodist Church. Those travelling
furthest for the service came from Kenilworth
and we received good wishes from as far away
as the United States. Three generations of
several families were present for what turned
out to be a wonderful celebration in worship and
over lunch in which our guest preacher, Rev
Katherine Pickering, spoke not only of the joy
of past memories but the challenges of being
church today and as a new chapter opens in the
life of Tylers Green Methodist Church. This
theme was echoed in the service as one person
taking part had been a member of our church for
all of its 50 years and another was being
received into membership on Trinity Sunday.
Looking to the immediate future, we are
preparing to say farewell to our minister, Rev
John Richey during July and the arrival of our
new minister, Rev Vida Foday, in September.
Also, during the life of this Village Voice I shall
also be celebrating that it is 40 years since God
first called me to be one Mr Wesley’s local
preachers in the Methodist Church. Alleluia!
These are all reasons to thank God for the
Methodist Church in Coppice Farm Road.
LETTERS CONT'D
Dear VV,
Peter Brown's courteous letter about the
Residents Society membership policy in regard
to the Football Club is a welcome. I hope in this
article to show that that it is possible to have
opposing views and at the same time express
them respectfully. Peter and I have worked
happily together for very nearly 40 years. We
were two of the original trio which set up Village
Voice in 1987 when we decided to try to rely on
advertising revenue rather than ask for a
subscription for the Residents Association
because it was difficult to keep up to date and to
collect. We did continue calling for a
subscription for a while, but this very soon
proved unnecessary. From memory, I think
membership was first defined as those within the
postal delivery of Penn Post Office (I was a
postman there at the time) and later by the
relevant electoral rolls for Penn, and Tylers
Green, unless someone wished to opt out.
Nobody has ever opted out and we have never
had any representation about our membership
policy or the consistent line we take on the
importance of defending the Green Belt, AONB,
Conservation Area and Listed Buildings - other
than from the Football Club.
The Football club is undeniably a valuable and
successful body, but it does have to satisfy
planning law. The Historic Building Officer stated
'I don't think there is any question that the
proposed spotlights would be harmful to the
setting of the listed buildings and the
Conservation Area' and concluded that the
public benefit of allowing them did not outweigh
that harm. This is the nub of the argument. A
balance has to be struck. The Chiltern Society,
Chiltern Conservation Board, CPRE and Parish
Council have all objected to the floodlights, as
did the Residents Society. The Football Club does
have the right to appeal against the planning
authority's decision to refuse the application.
Peter Brown posed questions as to whether
the Society has the backing of a majority of local
residents. Planning decisions are based on
planning law rather than on the numbers of
people who support a particular view, but we did
look at all the representations and found some
43 individual letters from residents opposing the
scheme and that some Letters Continued overleaf
