Another reminder about saving the
date Saturday 15 September for
the 49th Penn and Tylers
Green Village show. As the
date gradually creeps nearer
here are some more features
of this year’s schedule...
Flowers fruit and vegetables:
With the sun coming out over the
Bank Holiday weekend, did you sowing
your marrow and runner bean seeds for
children’s classes? As well tend to your
existing plants that will provide that flower for
the Show? We know there are a few of you out
there that nurture your roses, dahlias and
chrysanthemums I am sure they are getting
plenty of attention too. We are looking forward
to a few more novices entering this year.
Miscellaneous: Since we mentioned in the
last VV about branching out we have had a few
people intrigued at the chance to see eggs
displayed from their hens on the day and more
fun is to see what happy pets (caged) will be
entered too.
Domestic: We are sure people have been
inspecting their jars of jam and marmalade to
see which to save and enter to the Village Show
and avoid it being eaten between now and then.
Baking bread rolls is one of the entries which
provides you all with the chance to experiment
with different flours as well as working out the
technique to ensure they all come out a uniform
size and shape, happy baking to all of you. We
wonder how many lemon meringue pies will be
made and tasted over the next months, let us
know how many you have made when you
bring your entry in on the day.
Craft: Over the years, we have always had
one entry to be made from different materials,

such as wood, ceramic, metal or other items,
why not use recycled materials and show what
can be done with everyday items we discard in
our waste daily. Embroidery and needlework
has proved popular to a number of people in the
area and we look forward to their designs and
entries at the Village Show. We feel there
are lots of ideas out there to get you
started and can’t wait to see the
results. You still have time to
start designing and creating and
its open for all from youngsters
and grown-ups alike.
Art and photography: The
digitally enhanced photographs
have always drawn comments from
the judges, entrants as well as the
visitors on the day, ranging from shock at how a
photo can be distorted so much to wonder at
how a photo can be adapted and changed to
become a work or art in its own right. This year
we have tried to give much greater opportunities
for entrants making the subjects much broader
and naturally, looking forward to see what
arrives on the day. Junior photographers can
have a go at “all creatures great and small” and
“the sky’s the limit”.
Junior: There are a whole host of junior
classes. Don’t forget - if you really can’t think
of what to do in your own age group, enter an
older age group or the open classes which are
open to everyone. How are your sunflowers
growing or are you just about to sow the seeds?
What with the news about a new caterpillar that
has arrived in the UK, it opens up more ideas
for the under 3’s, 5’s and 7’s to be more creative
with their entries. Our blind judge always loves
attending the Show and spends time
experiencing most of the entries and is looking
forward to tasting the junior’s popcorn
experiments along with mugs of fragrant herbs.
Schedules will be in local shops from the end
of May and if you can’t wait that long, you’ll
find a list of classes and on the village website.
