VV readers may remember we have
previously featured news of local resident,
and rising star - Matilda Hopkins. 4
Years ago, at the age of 8, she performed
in Les Miserables in the West End, and
when she was 10, in Annie, again in the
West End...
More recently, now aged
12, Matilda completed The
Sound of Music UK &
Ireland Tour, having been
selected in the face of stiff
competition at the audition
process. The auditions for
The Sound of Music UK
Tour were held in London
last September, when
approximately 500 children
were seen. She was called back for the next day
and then to final call the week after.
She was selected for the part of Brigitta Von
Trapp. Rehearsals were in London and started in
November. The tour opened in Dublin on the
19th December and Matilda was lucky enough
to be in the opening show. The Dublin shows
ran until 6th of January 2018, and Matilda
travelled there three times during that period
and performed in 15 shows. She then went on

to perform in theatres across the
U.K including Birmingham,
Glasgow, Coventry, Cardiff and
Southsea. She was away 3 to 4 days at a time
and was chaperoned and tutored whilst on tour.
She stayed in hotels with the other children and
had an amazing time, she loved every minute
and didn't want it to end! Her last show was in
March 2018 and was sad for it to be finished.
Matilda's next adventure is The Little
Princess, which is being staged at The Royal
Festival Hall. Joanne Hopkins
Ed's note: it is always a delight to learn of the
success of our young residents, and to learn a
little more about 'behind the scenes' activities
which result in the staging of successful
productions. Matilda seems destined for success
in the performing arts environment: we wish her
every success in her future endeavours, and look
forward to the next instalment in her story.
