“A promising development for
10 thousand ALS patients”
Good news arrived about a promising new treatment method for ALS,
a serious neurological disease. Academic Member of the Neurology
Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the İstanbul University Prof.
Dr. Halil Atilla İdrisoğlu informed about the medicine that slows down
and stops ALS and was approved by the FDA.
ALS can cause muscle weakness, respiration and
swallowing difficulties, disability and eventually death
as the result of the dying cells in spinal cord and brain
stem. Patients’ accessing to new treatments and
medicines without any delay plays an important role in
the treatment of the disease.
“ALS does not have only one known reason”
Remarking that ALS is a disease that is also named
motor neuron disease and caused by the loss of motor
nerve cells (neurons) in the area called spinal cord and
brain stem in the central nervous system, Academic
Member of the Neurology Department of the Faculty of
Medicine of the İstanbul University Prof. Dr. Halil Atilla
İdrisoğlu said “The loss of these cells cause weakness
and myolysis in muscles. Furthermore, the first neuron
of the early or late movement is also diseased. Mental
functions and memory are not disrupted.
