A Happy Follow Up
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
Last month, I wrote about a reader who
moved from California and lost his original
Social Security card, having only copies of his
identification. Thank you to all our readers who suggested ways get a
replacement card.
The Social Security office insisted that it will only issue a replacement
if you have the original. A “Catch 22” indeed!
Some of your ideas were unique and all were forwarded to the family
of our senior, who had been waiting patiently for Senator Dean Heller
to follow up on his promise of help following my telephone call to his
office. After three weeks however, I gave up on him.
Fortunately our columnist Howard Beckerman invited The Vegas
Voice to attend a breakfast meeting of Democratic candidates. He
advised that Congresswoman (and now Senatorial candidate) Jacky
Rosen would be there.
With all the information on this gentleman in hand, I put my
Republican pride on hold and I spotted the Congresswoman as she
entered the room. Upon introducing myself, I asked if I might have a
moment of her time.
The Congresswoman said this should be no big issue and she put me
in touch with her two top staffers. More importantly, she promised to
have the problem handled in 48 hours.
Bottom line, the gentleman has his new Social Security card and will
Rana: A United States citizen, born and raised, not to mention
a WW ll Vet, should not have to jump through these many hoops in
order to obtain a replacement for documentation he has had for
nearly 95 years. Thank you so much…
To quote my wife “you are the Bomb” (or Bombette, to be more
precise)! Your active participation with my dad’s Social Security
nightmare signifies one of the reasons we chose to move to Las
Vegas…
Our family cannot thank you enough for your efforts. The
title of your article in The Vegas Voice could not have been more
appropriate… and that’s sad. Outside of dad’s situation, my
concern is for the countless senior citizens who may face the same
roadblocks, and not have the assistance of a son, daughter-in-law,
and noted columnist at their side. Bless you.
As Publisher Dan likes to say: Every once in a while, the good guys
win! And be assured, I’ll keep trying.
