CLASSICS AND ANCIENT HISTORy
Paris: The ‘New Rome’
of Napoleon I
Diana Rowell
• Under-studied
yet rich topic in
reception studies
• Wide range of
contemporary
sources
• New insights into
exploitation of
antiquity
Classical Rome was central to
Napoleon’s ambitious visions for the
transformation of Paris into a metropolis
of unprecedented magnitude. Exploring
the interrelationship between antiquity,
the display of power and the reinvention
of Paris, this volume evaluates how the
Roman world influenced Napoleonic
Paris, and how Napoleon promoted his
authority by appropriating antique Rome’s
triumphal architecture and its associated
symbolism to relocate ‘Rome’ in his own
times.
