DIETITIAN’S VIEW Alcohol abuse and nutrition therapy by Nancy M. Ouhib, MBA, RD, LD/N Alcohol abuse is considered to be any pattern of alcohol consumption that harms your health, relationships, or work. Alcohol abuse can affect how your body breaks down and absorbs nutrients from foods by causing your liver to function abnormally. Many people who do abuse alcohol do not consume enough protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. This can lead to malnutrition and a number of nutrient deficiencies, which can lead to further health complications. Nutrients that are commonly lacking among people who abuse alcohol include a number of vitamins and minerals, as follows. Vitamin A is stored in your liver. It is important for your vision, metabolism, and your ability to fight off infections. B Complex vitamins include folic acid, thiamin, and niacin. These all play an important role in new cell growth and maintenance. Vitamin C is very important in iron absorption, wound healing, and fighting off infections. Vitamin D is produced by your liver, but you also get vitamin D from food sources. You need vitamin D present to absorb and utilize calcium. Calcium is important for your bones, heart, and blood vessels. Iron is essential for blood, muscle, and nervous system functioning. Magnesium plays an important role in muscle and nervous systems and in the control of blood sugar and blood pressure. Zinc is essential in your digestive and nervous system functions and in wound healing. Because of all the deficiencies that are possible in alcohol abuse, nutrition is an essential component of therapy to help restore nutrients and to prevent potential health complications. A balanced diet includes all of the food groups for diversity: Dairy: 2-3 cups per day Fruits: 1-2 cups per day Grains: 6-8 ounces per day Meats and other proteins: 5-6 ounces per day Vegetables: 2-3 cups per day In the recovery process, it is valuable to consume foods that are high in antioxidants such as grapes, berries, nuts, green tea, and dark green and orange vegetables. These can help to counteract some of the stress that has been placed on your liver from the alcohol consumption. Refrain from foods such as salty snack foods, candy, and sugared sodas, because they are deficient in important nutrients that need to be replenished. Try to eat five to six small meals per day. Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables daily for plenty of water, fiber, and vitamins. Hydrate yourself with water; it helps to flush our system. Eat high protein foods and foods that are fortified such as milk, orange juice, cereal, and bread. Make your calories count and make nutrient dense food choices. Limit your intake of caffeine; one cup per day is ample. Eat good sources of omega three fatty acids including fish. You may not be able to consume all of the food and calories you need at meals. A nutrition supplement may help you achieve that. A dietitian can recommend the supplement and amount that is appropriate for your circumstances. A vitamin/mineral supplement may also be recommended. Include healthy lifestyle changes such as getting enough sleep, being physically active and fit, and spending time doing activities you enjoy. These activities and changes will help to keep you positive, establish routines, and improve your health. A lack of sleep can lead to a decrease in well-being, reduced cognitive function, and reduced energy. It is always beneficial to practice a healthful bedtime routine. The goals of nutrition therapy are to heal and nourish the body damaged by alcohol abuse, to reduce your stress and stabilize your mood, reduce your cravings for alcohol, address medical conditions that may have resulted from alcohol abuse, and to encourage self-management and a healthful lifestyle.
