LOCAL Adult comics are no laughing matter by Cynthia MacGregor What do you think of when you think of comic books? If you’re like most people, comics were a semi-guilty childhood pleasure indulged in over the protests of parents and teachers alike, who wanted you to read real books instead. Your tastes may have run to Superman, Little Lulu, or Archie, and you may have sometimes read them under the covers with the aid of a flashlight when you were supposed to be settling down to sleep. But if you’re like a growing number of comic book fans, you never outgrew your love of comics and, even today, have a collection that probably includes the comic books of at least one action hero and may include some rare and valuable editions. Nakia Mann of Tate’s Comics in Lauderhill discussed the appeal of comic books to adult collectors. Mann opined that some fanciers enjoy the pictures — these are the art lovers in the group — while for others the pull is nostalgia and a love for the characters whose stories they have been reading for 30, 40, even 50 years. Asked how the size of the adult comic book industry has changed over the years, he said he sees a steady increase. Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and more recently Image Comics put out quality work across the board, and the collectors appreciate that. Collectors, Mann said, range across all ages and are divided roughly 50/50 between men and women. In fact, when asked if any of the comic artists or writers are South Florida residents, the two names that came to his mind were both women: Jody Houser writes Mother Panic and has written a couple of Star Wars comic books, and Vanesa Del Rey is an artist working on Redlands. Both are South Florida residents. Asked if there is more interest in vintage comics or new ones, Mann answered that it depends on the collector. People always seek out vintage comics, but lately some of the newer releases have had limited printings, increasing their value. The most popular adult comics today are the classic action heroes: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and X-Men. In fact, the highest price a rare comic book has fetched was $1 million for Action Comics #1, featuring the first-ever appearance of Superman. Of course, most comics don’t go for nearly that much. Typically they range from $2.99 to $8.99. While some adult comic collectors are strictly into comics and nothing else, others also collect action figures and statues, which can range from 6” to 2’ in height. Although the Megacon Convention in Orlando is the biggest such event in Florida, South Floridians wishing to attend the largest one in the U.S. would have to travel to San Diego, California to attend the Comic Con. But you don’t have to travel far to get together with fellow adult comic fanciers. Not only are there groups listed on Meetup, but Mann said, “Not to toot our own horn, but often comic collectors come in to browse, stop to chat with our staff, and wind up talking with other customers as well.” With the prices of some of the more rare items being as high as they are, comic books are no laughing matter.
