the folks we lost never be forgotten, whether they were
firefighters, civilians, all of them.”
What sets this unique exhibit apart is the depth it provides,
especially for younger visitors. Every generation deals with
the disassociation of prior events, and for many of the young
adults born after 2001, the 9/11 terrorist attacks are no
exception.
“Two years ago for the 15th anniversary I went into the
high schools, and when you look in the history books on
what they write about 9/11, it’s like me reading about Pearl
Harbor,” recounted Orlando. “They don’t know. It’s important
to educate our kids. There’s so much horror but there’s so
much good that can come out of it. You have to look at how
we can utilize this awful tragedy and make some good come
out of it.”
Every part of this memorial is meant to preserve the sanctity
of the lives lost in 2001. Even the people who guide visitors
through the trailer are retired firefighters.
“[The foundation] educates; they go to places where people
maybe can’t afford to go to New York to really see the full
scope of what happened and how people were affected,”
Orlando said. “Our city has really dedicated itself to always
doing something. Always educate, go after the schools,
make sure we do something on 9/11 so that we can not only
memorialize our residents that we lost, but also keep their
memory alive by educating these young kids.” P
