A brush with love
A brush with love
by Beth Black
In a fortunate twist of fate, the side passion of mental
health therapist Dr. Julio Busciolano led to a broader
platform of healing for Marjory Stoneman Douglas
students seeking ways to cope following the tragic shooting
at their high school on February 14. Dr. Busciolano, who
has been working with some of the teens in off-campus
therapy sessions, found himself seeking a booth at Lola’s
Market to showcase his vinyl record collection but found so
much more. During some of the sessions with the students,
art therapy has been used to help them express their
emotions. The result is a lovely collection of painted tiles
offering positive affirmations such as “Take Every Chance
Drop Every Fear” and “Imagine & Dream.” Dr. Busciolano
was introduced to Evan Anthony, the owner of Lola’s and the
surrounding property, who in conversation learned not only
of his record collection but of his connection to the students.
Anthony’s compassion for the children and the desire to
provide them a place where they could come and feel safe
led him to offer an area to feature the tiles as well as a larger
space for self-expression.
Walls from what once was a building on the property serve
as a canvas for artists whose bold and colorful work is part
ceremony to thank art teacher Lauren Rosa who has had a
huge role in helping the children with the mural. Photos by Beth Black
Dr. Julio Busciolano speaks
at Lola’s Market, where he
was offered a wall for the
students to paint a mural on
for the 17 people who were
killed during the shooting.
The wall offers an opportunity
for the students to express
themselves and show honor
to those who died.
