CORAL SPRINGS MAYOR
SKIP CAMPBELL
With summer over and school back
in session, it’s time to turn our
attention to the upcoming historical and
educational events taking place in the
City of Coral Springs.
The terrorist attacks that took place on
September 11, 2001 left an indelible
mark upon our nation and its history. In
the aftermath of such tragedy came renewed faith in preserving
the memory and actions of those who lost their lives on that day.
One of those initiatives is the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit.
The exhibit will be in the parking area between the Public Safety
Building and Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2601 Coral Springs Drive.
Additional details about the mobile exhibit’s ceremonial arrival, our
9/11 memorial service, and ticket reservations are on coralsprings.
org/events.
Have you purchased your tickets to the City’s annual International
Dinner Dance? Bella Notte in Italia – That’s Amore is scheduled for
Saturday, September 15, at 7pm. Guests will enjoy Italian cuisine,
dancing, and live entertainment. Call 954-344-1005.
I want to turn my focus to a serious issue affecting our City and
municipalities across the nation – recycling contamination. The
City entered into a new contract for recyclable material processing,
which includes penalties for excessive contamination. I want to
make sure our residents and businesses understand why these
changes are in place and how we can work together to make
recycling right in Coral Springs.
China, the largest overseas market to procure our recyclable
material, no longer accepts foreign waste – stating recyclable
material from the U.S. and other countries is over-contaminated,
resulting in an environmental hazard. The truth is, our recycling has
become too wet, dirty, and commonly mixed with non-recyclable
material, downgrading the value.
Under our new processing contract, there is a 10 percent
threshold for contamination. If we are unable to reach that goal,
the City will be financially penalized. Understand that Waste
Management is the only company to offer a bid to collect our
recycling. There were no other options at the conclusion of our
contract with Sun Bergeron; and recycling is too important for our
environment to simply stop and start sending our recyclables to
the landfill. Our city chose to lead the way for other municipalities
by being the first to accept the new term of this contract and
launched an educational campaign for residents and businesses.
Less contamination translates to higher market value for our
recyclables and reduces the amount of material sent for disposal
at a landfill. As a reminder, always check your blue cart before
putting it out to the curb to ensure all items are approved
recyclable materials. Visit coralsprings.org/recycleright for a list of
common contaminants, and for information
on correctly recycling. P
