THE LAST WORD
We’re having a heat wave!
by Barbara Negron
As the summer draws to a close, the heat doesn’t. I don’t
think I can remember a summer this hot in all my years
living in South Florida. That would be 35 years now, I think.
Even the beach has been unbearable. One Sunday, my sister
and I packed up the beach gear, the cooler, and headed to
Hollywood. We parked, paid, which was $12 for three hours,
and picked out a spot near the water. After setting up the
beach chairs and umbrella, we settled in for what we hoped
to be a restful few hours. A half hour later, we packed up
everything and headed to a destination with air conditioning.
Talk about your dog days of summer. The unbearable heat
has everyone talking and trying to stay cool and hydrated.
News reports and stories talk about how the northern
hemisphere is experiencing one of the hottest summers ever
recorded. The wildfires, the death toll, the heat related illness,
and the high temperatures affect the change in weather
patterns. Not much has been said, though, about what has
caused this unusual summer heat. Some say it’s just the
natural cycle of weather patterns, others, well…
they blame the climate change on global warming.
I’m going to say it’s probably a bit of both. Not everyone is a
fan of the global warming theory but let’s face it; everything
we do affects the earth. Remember the big hoopla over
pollution? I remember the commercial of the Indian chief with
the tear running down his cheek because of how polluted
the land had become. Of course, today that commercial
would be inappropriate, but back then it got the point across.
The government made efforts to “Keep America Clean,”
and it seems to have worked pretty well. Today the big deal
is recycling and doing it properly. We still have a way to go
on that but forward progress is being made. I believe some
people don’t want to acknowledge global warming because
it would make humans responsible for the earth slowly being
destroyed. It’s easier to say this unnatural heat is a natural
occurrence. Maybe it is, but then again, maybe not.
Right now, all I know is it’s hot. P
