‘KIND OF BLUE’ AT WORK
"Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz group will
next be performing in the Bell pub, Woodham
Ferrers on Monday 24th September, 8.30-11 pm.
One of the numbers from our “book” of jazz “classics” we
feature, will be “Work Song”. Written by Nat Adderley in the
'60s, it exhibits a feeling prevalent in the civil rights movement.
Jazz in the hands of bands, such as the Modern Jazz Quartet was
becoming more and more sophisticated, influenced by European
"classical" music and to some Afro-Americans this was a betrayal
of their black culture.
Musicians such as Adderley and the organist, Jimmy Smith,
wanted to show pride in their ancestors, and composed some of
their works in the style of the "slave music". Jimmy Smith was
influenced by early black gospel songs.
Nat's "Work Song" (as the title implies) harks back to songs that
were used to accompany the back-breaking labour on the
plantations. But it "swings" enough to make a perfect vehicle
for modern jazz improvisation and you can hear how good it is
if you come to the Bell on the 24th.
Entry and sandwiches are free, and you will experience a
convivial atmosphere. See you there!!
JUST A NOTE FOR YOUR DIARY
We were due to be in the Bell on October 29th, but we have had
to move it forward to the 22nd
Make sure you don't miss it!!
Five days of dinghy racing in South Woodham Ferrers
The last week in August provided perfect conditions for Eyott
Sailing Club’s annual regatta with warm and sunny afternoons
and light to medium winds. The five-day competition was open
to all local sailors and it was great to host members of Up River
Sailing Club, Hullbridge. As well as sailing the week included
family activities at the club during the day with social events
most evenings.
The racing was as competitive as ever with 77 boat starts during
the week. It was great to see competitors spanning the
generations with sailors from 7 to over 70 years old enjoying
their sport. The racing was very close especially among the
Heron and Comet fleet where many of the younger competitors
Whilst the fleet was racing non-sailing family members and
supporters enjoyed the sun and the peaceful surroundings of the
club whilst the children (of all ages) competed in the week-long
crabbing completion. This year’s winner was Tierney with a 68
gram ‘nipper’ that was returned safely to the river after it had
terrorised the judge during the ‘weigh in’.
The now-traditional evening events included; a light hearted
game of rounders at Saltcoats Park followed by tea and biscuits
back at the club, a fantastic treasure hunt in the club grounds and
a quiz with fish & chip supper in the clubhouse. The week ended
with the prize giving, BBQ and buffet supper on Friday evening.
MILITARY AND FLYING MACHINES
SHOW MOVES TO PURLEIGH AND
CHANGES NAME TO ECHOES OF
HISTORY SHOW
The military heritage preservation charity, Essex HMVA, would
like to announce that their flagship event, the Military and
Flying Machines show is to be renamed Echoes of History,
which will be a multi-period history-based event, that will
take place at Barons Lane, Purleigh, Essex, CM9 6PF.
Colin Tebb, Chairman, Essex HMVA said: “Moving the show to
Purleigh gave us an opportunity to look once again at the best
of what the Military and Flying Machines show has to offer,
this has enabled us to have greater focus on living history
displays, military history preservation and exhibitors. We
sincerely believe that these changes will prove to be exciting
to both prior and new visitors alike
The new event will continue to be run on a charitable basis by
a team of unpaid volunteers, with profits going to support
the Charity and other good causes”.
The new show will remain a two-day event, taking place on
Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th of August 2019.
The Essex HMVA is committed to its aims to promote an
understanding of military preservation as well as military
history, providing a source of education and information to
support similar minded individuals and organisations.
Associate memberships are available (and ownership of a
military vehicle is not a requirement) as many of our members
have collections of varying military objects.
The Essex HMVA looks forward to progressing with the show,
which in various guises has been running for over 25 years and
sees this as an opportunity to make the new Echoes of History
event better than ever - we hope you will continue to support
us on this new and exciting adventure.
SWF ROTARY CLUB CONTRIBUTE TO
MERCY SHIPS
CALLING ALL YEAR 8s TO YEAR 11s
Peter Montgomery of the Mercy Ships
Charity gave a very interesting presentation
to the Rotary Club about the work that the
Mercy Ships do.
Mercy Ships is a faith-based international
development organisation that deploys
hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in the world,
delivering vital, free healthcare to people in desperate need.
Conditions requiring surgical treatment
kill more people in low-income
countries than HIV/Aids, TB and malaria
combined. Globally, five billion people
have no access to safe, affordable
surgery when they need it.
In sub-Saharan Africa, up to 69% of
people live on less than £2 a day.
Healthcare in these countries either
doesn't exist or is unaffordable to the
vast majority of the population.
As well as completing thousands of
urgent operations onboard its “floating
hospital”, the Africa Mercy, Mercy Ships
Peter Montgomery
pictured receiving a
cheque from President
Terry Tillbrook.
volunteers also work closely with host nations to improve the
way healthcare is delivered across the country, by training and
mentoring local medical staff, and renovating hospitals and
clinics.
If you are age 12 and in Year 8 or above and are interested in
Flying, Shooting, Fieldcraft, Archery, WaterSports and the D of E
Award Scheme (and much more!!) the Royal Air Force Air Cadets
2531 Woodham Ferrers Squadron will be hosting an Open
at our HQ on Creekview Road, SWF, CM3 5GX
We would love to see as many potential cadets as possible and
encourage you to join our fantastic Squadron.
On the evening we will be showcasing some of the activities we
offer and displaying some of our high profile awards. We look
forward to seeing you there!
GIRLS FOOTBALL SESSIONS
Have fun, make friends, play football!
Our all girl offical FA Wildcats sessions restart this Saturday, right here in
South Woodham Ferrers, on the 3G pitch from 9-10.
If your daughter is aged between 5-8 and looking to get into Football
then get in touch.
These informal sessions we will run by our female coaches and are designed
to enable you to learn how to play football whilst having fun.
Founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships has
worked in more than 70 countries, providing services valued at
more than £1 billion. By improving healthcare delivery in every
country it visits, Mercy Ships is working to eradicate the diseases
of poverty and effectively do itself out of a job. Mercy Ships
follows the 2,000-year-old model of Jesus by “bringing hope and
healing to the forgotten poor”, helping people of all faiths and
none. Among the countries Mercy Ships serves, which lie on the
lower third of the World Health Organisation’s Human
Development Index, access to safe, affordable and timely surgery
is extremely limited. As a result, countless people suffer and die
from “diseases of poverty” that can easily be cured.
The WI for Inspiring Women
Instead of our August meeting our ladies met for lunch at The Warren Golf Club. We
were also joined by some members from South Hanningfield WI.
We were served a delicious two course lunch in beautiful surroundings and then whilst
enjoying our coffee we were given a talk by Kerry about the history of The Warren.
Kerry has worked at The Warren for many years and one evening she glimpsed a small
boy dressed in old fashioned clothes. When she mentioned what she had seen she was
shown a photograph of a small child which was identical to the boy she had seen. He
was a member of the Durham family who used to own The Warren and his name is
Freddie. He has been seen many times and now has a room named after him.
Kerry showed us another photograph and if you look closely you can see a ghostly
figure in tudor costume. He has been seen many times but he is not a friendly ghost.
They have hosted some paranormal evenings and have a video of a roaring fire in the
bar area which spontaneously ignited. There were lots of doors opening and closing
on there own and their equipment picked up white noice and some very cold spots
especially in the banquet room. We asked the question does anyone ever spend the
night at The Warren and the answer was a definite no! We were very pleased that we
were there at during the day time. It was a very interesting learning about the history
of The Warren and its ghosts.
Our Forth Coming Events
Also at The Civic Theatre on 8th November we have a theatre trip to see ‘Les
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 26th September at champions Manor Hall 7.30pm
SALTMARSH75 TWO-DAY ULTRA MARATHON 6TH & 7TH OCTOBER
Could you walk or run 75 miles in just two days?
The Saltmarsh75 is a two day ultra-marathon, where competitors
tackle 75 miles of some of England’s most unique and stunning
coast line; the Saltmarsh Coast of the Maldon District. People
take on the challenge as a walker, a runner, or a bit of both - we
have a variety of packages to suit all, including relay and duo
options.
is the psychological challenges presented by the never ending
flatness of the Saltmarsh Coast that defeated them. Others claim
the camaraderie of other participants and volunteers make the
Saltmarsh 75 their favourite ever event.
The event, conceived by two Council employees, is also a good
test of the Council’s emergency response resources and
protocols. Owing to the remoteness of some parts of the course,
the event is supported by Rover Rescue which is part of Essex
Land Rover Club and RAYNET, The Radio Amateurs' Emergency
Network.
For further information please see www.saltmarsh75.co.uk, or
visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/saltmarsh75.
Last year’s event saw over 150 competitors come to Maldon
District to test themselves in the two day event.
Cllr Bob Boyce MBE, Chairman of Community Services, said “The
Saltmarsh 75 is a great event and a true challenge. Competitors
travel the full length of the Maldon District coast line and
discover miles of stunning wilderness and coastal towns. The
Council is proud to be able to support this event, but without
the efforts of all our volunteers it could not take place.”
Limited places are still available at www.Saltmarsh75.co.uk
Starting in South Woodham Ferrers, the 75 mile trail follows the
River Crouch until it meets the North Sea, before turning left
through the remote Dengie Marshes to Bradwell-on-Sea at the
mouth of the Blackwater Estuary. Sunday’s remaining 37 miles
run through the Blackwater’s historical towns and villages of
Maldon, Goldhanger and Tollesbury, finishing at the hamlet of
Salcott-cum-Virley.
Participants can choose either to run or walk the course, and
many do a mix of both. Some complete each day in around seven
hours while many walk until well after darkness has fallen, which
in the Dengie is very dark. Over the last few years only around 45
- 75% of participants have managed to complete the challenge
and many have returned to try again. Some participants claim it
The Gift of Communication
We all have a gift of communication. What sets us apart from other species, is the
ability to consider and formulate what we say or respond to what we have heard;
and express ourselves in different ways. There are animals that appear to have similar
skills but, not having the ability to use other ways of communicating, they nurture
and support each other on a more basic level, yet effective.
Communication is a two-way operation. We are the same species, trying to live our lives out in Love, Joy and Peace. How we listen
is more important than what we say. In the Bible the tongue is referred to as a rudder on a large boat, insofar as it appears to
be small in relation to the scale of the boat, yet it`s influence can be huge.
The ability to consider what we have heard before speaking, emailing, texting, posting in whatever form (words or pictures) is
important. It is important that we do not stop talking to each other in whatever form but appreciate that we are different, in
different situations and not fall into judgement without a full appreciation of the other situation. Life can be hard enough, at
times, and what we say (and sometimes it can be good to talk) should be True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, and Kind.
It is important that children are encouraged to have a voice. The environment that they are brought up in, whether home,
school or clubs, will involve people of different ages and stations in life and examples should be set of open conversation, a
listening and guidance. If the rudder is not controlled, the boat goes off course.
We have all seen or heard the news where it is upsetting and disturbing and we state that those involved are worst than animals.
This suggests that animals are worst behaved in general than us. Sometimes I feel that the gifts that we have been given as
mentioned earlier are misused and we fail ourselves and others.
We are capable of acts of kindness and encouragement which improve each other’s lives. We need to guard against thoughtless
comment.
IN THE NEWS: The European Heart Journal reports that teenagers who
both smoke and drink suffer ill effects by age of 17. There is, for example,
evidenced of stiffening of the arteries (something that usually takes
place later in life and is associated with conditions such as high blood
pressure, heart attacks and strokes ... which, in some cases, can leave you
in a wheelchair and incapable of speech.)
The fact that damage to the heart and blood vessels starts to occur early
has been known for years. For example, it was shown in the Korean
Soldiers Study (which was begun in 1951.) They looked at young
American soldiers (mean age: 22.1 years) killed in the conflict.
Here are the findings: "In 77.3% of the hearts, some evidence of
atherosclerosis was discovered. For 35% of the cases, the disease was
limited to “fibrous thickening or streaking causing insignificant luminal
narrowing.” For 13.3% of the population, plaques had narrowed the
lumina by 10%. For 5.3% of the population, the lumina had narrowed by
90%." The lumen, (pleural = lumina) by the way, is the hole in the middle
of the blood vessel that the blood has to pass through ... so if this is
narrow, less and less blood can get to the heart muscle and it's ever more
likely that it will clot and cut the supply off ... thereby causing a 'heart
attack.' The message to the young is, therefore, that it's never too soon
to start looking after your health.
"What do colour blind people do when they are told to eat their
greens?" - Flo and Joan
AND ... Joe Watts writes in the Independent that "Shops will be banned
from selling Red Bull and other drinks “packed to the brim with caffeine”
to teenagers, under plans announced by Theresa May. The scheme will
see retailers blocked from selling energy drinks to under 16s and possibly
even under 18s. Insiders told The Independent the intention is to use the
same sanctions as selling cigarettes to children – meaning shops could
be slapped with fines of £2,500. Ms May said she was acting as evidence
shows excessive consumption of the drinks by children is linked to serious
health problems. Some deaths are even connected to them. The move
was welcomed by campaigners including Jamie Oliver, but there will be
a backlash from manufacturers and even some ministers who see it as
“nanny-statism”.
Apart from the damaging physical effects, the worrying thing about
reliance on these drinks by the young is that it encourages a state of
mind whereby they genuinely feel they need pharmaceutical help to
get through the day. This attitude tends to stick - so by the age of 30
many of these people will be taking a bucket-full of medication every
day (most of which will be unnecessary.) That is most definitely NOT good
for your health.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
GENERAL PRACTICE UNDER THREAT. GP newspaper reports that "More
than 1,000 GPs and patients have written to health and social care
secretary Matt Hancock in just 10 days as part of a campaign to highlight
the crisis facing general practice."
The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) is behind the scheme.
The letter states: "As plans are drawn up to spend the additional money
committed to the NHS by the prime minister, the vital importance of
general practice to the NHS must be recognised. That is why I’m backing
the RCGP’s calls for £2.5bn extra a year to be invested in general practice
services by 2020/21, bringing investment up to £14.5bn a year."
Underfunding is threatening the continued existence of general practice
as we know it - and SWF is more underfunded than most other areas.
Those patients who take an interest in these matters are calling for NHS
England to "GIVE US BACK OUR £500,000" (That being a guesstimate of
how much has been taken out of the SWF healthcare budget each year
due to the comparatively recent closure of two practices and cuts to
practice budgets.) Watch for developments.
"I took out a loan to pay for an exorcism. If I don't pay it back, I'm going
to get repossessed" - Olaf Falafel
NEEDLESS DEATHS. Every week patients die because of a lack of body
parts. A bit of them goes wrong and sooner or later it starts to give up
the ghost. At this stage the gift of a new liver or kidney ... or a new heart
and/or lungs .. gives them a new lease of life.
This week the BBC reports a major shortage of people willing to donate
their lungs and tells us that NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has said
that "the challenge of matching lungs of the right size and a rising
number of ageing donors are possible factors. It called on people to talk
about organ donation, because lung transplants are the only hope for
those on the list. The overall waiting list for organs has come down over
the same period."
Those who saw Simon Pegg in Burke & Hare on TV will know that the
shortage of bodies and body parts isn't new. In 'the bad old days' the
legitimate supply of bodies (from sources such as hangings) hich could be
used for teaching anatomy to aspiring doctors was inadequate.
Entrepreneurs therefore started digging up 'fresh' bodies ... and B & H
even turned their hand to murder in order to keep up with demand.
From time to time we hear talk of an 'opt out' system for organ donation
... whereby instead of giving permission it will be assumed that you have
agreed unless you have filled in a form saying you DON'T want anyone
to have your organs after you die. It's not an ideal solution but it would
overcome the 'inertia factor' and would enable thousands more patients
to receive a timely transplant.
“My mother made us eat all sorts of vitamins and supplements. One day
I nearly choked on part of The Sunday Times.” – Milton Jones
AND ... Nick Triggle (of the BBC) writes that many serious ops are
cancelled "on the day" ... including "everything from heart operations
and cancer surgery to complex abdominal cases and joint replacements."
He adds that "Research led by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and
University College London looked at more than 26,000 cases in a sevenday
period in March last year, across 245 UK hospitals. They found one in
seven operations were cancelled on the day of surgery. However,
researchers acknowledged it was likely this figure would be lower during
quieter periods of the year. Nonetheless, they said the problem needed
addressing as it put the health and welfare of patients at risk."
At the moment we're encouraged to have 'the conversation' with the
family - so that, if a tragedy occurs and your organs potentially become
available to those who desperately need them, family members won't
stand in the way.
That said, the shortage will remain for the foreseeable future. SWF isn't
short of entrepreneurs, though, and I did wonder when I saw this van
parked, if a resident who is capable of thinking 'outside the box' has
found a solution to the crisis.
This frequently happens because there is no spare capacity in the NHS ...
and it will keep happening because funding is such a problem. We GPs
frequently see people who have had out-patient appointments
postponed time after time.
Another major factor is poor management - for example, months in
advance a consultant books time off for a holiday in, say, June but
nobody thinks to cancel his clinics or to ensure that there is a
replacement consultant available. Consquently, when Jne comes around,
everybody is taken by surprise.
"I've always wanted to go to Switzerland to see what the army does with
all those wee red knives." Billy Connolly.
In case I'm wrong about this, can I suggest that you Google: 'organ
donation' or go to https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/register-todonate/
