<strong>The</strong> island <strong>of</strong> Jeju was considered a stronghold <strong>of</strong><br />

the Korean independence movement and the South<br />

Korean Labor Party. Syngman Rhee had proclaimed<br />

martial law to quell an insurgency.<br />

Up to 10% <strong>of</strong> the island's population died (14,000 to<br />

30,000) as a result <strong>of</strong> the conflict, and another 40,000<br />

fled to Japan.<br />

vary. According to Pr<strong>of</strong>. Kim Dong-Choon,<br />

Commissioner <strong>of</strong> the Truth and Reconciliation<br />

Commission, at least 100,000 people were executed<br />

on suspicion <strong>of</strong> supporting communism; others<br />

estimate 200,000 deaths. <strong>The</strong> massacre was wrongly<br />

blamed on the communists for decades.<br />

civilian massacre) was a massacre conducted by the<br />

police <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> Goyang Police Station <strong>of</strong> the South<br />

Korean Police under the commanding <strong>of</strong> head <strong>of</strong><br />

Goyang police station between 9 October 1950 and 31<br />

October 1950 <strong>of</strong> 150 or over 153 unarmed citizens<br />

in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do district <strong>of</strong> South Korea. After<br />

the victory <strong>of</strong> the Second Battle <strong>of</strong> Seoul, South<br />

Korean police arrested and killed people and their<br />

families who they suspected had been sympathisers<br />

during North Korean rule. During the massacre, South<br />

a massacre conducted by a unit <strong>of</strong> the South Korean<br />

Army 11th Division during the Korean <strong>War</strong>. On<br />

February 7, 1951, 705 unarmed citizens<br />

in Sancheong and Hamyang, South<br />
