After you configure Network Manager for your wired Ethernet card, it attempts to start the card at the same time you start your workstation. If the Network Manager applet appears on the panel but shows no connection (a red X on the icon), check the cabling to make sure you plugged in things correctly. Also, check the network hub you’re connecting to. Look Ma, no cables! The wireless phenomenon has taken home networking by storm. Nowadays a wireless router is just as easy to purchase and install as a wired switch. If you’ve jumped on the wireless bandwagon, you need to know how to connect your Fedora system to your wireless access point. You first hurdle may be the wireless network card itself. Unfortunately, wireless network support is still in its infancy in the Linux world. Although each new version of Fedora includes support for more wireless network cards, it’s still quite possible that your wireless network card is not supported. If your wireless network card is not supported, you have a last-ditch measure you can resort to: the ndiswrapper project. The ndiswrapper project is an open-source project that uses Windows network drivers supplied for wireless network cards to create a pseudo-Linux driver. Unfortunately, neither Fedora nor Ubuntu provide the ndiswrapper software in the default configuration, but you can find it in other areas. You can find out more about ndiswrapper by visiting http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/. If you’re lucky enough to have a wireless network card that is supported by your Linux installation, you can use the Network Manager tool to configure it for your wireless access point: 1. Left-click the Network Manager Applet icon to display a list of wireless access points detected, as shown in Figure 8-8. The signal strength of each network is depicted by the orange bar. Networks protected by security passwords show an additional icon. 2. Select the network you want to connect with, and then enter the network security password (if required). Skip to Step 4. If the network is security protected, Network Manager prompts you to enter the password required to connect with the network. 3. If you don’t see the name of the network you want to connect with, (such as if the network uses a hidden SSID), select Connect to Hidden Wireless Network. The Hidden Wireless Network dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 8-9.

Enter the name of the wireless network, and then enter the security scheme (if any) that it uses. If you select a security scheme that requires a password, a new text box appears for you to enter the password. 4. Save the settings by clicking Connect. The Network Manager Applet displays an animated icon in the panel indicating that it’s trying to connect to the wireless network. If the connection is successful, you see the signal strength meter icon.
