2. Select the application category from the left side list.
You can also use the search text box at the top-right side of the window to
search for a specific application, or for a keyword within an application.
3. Select an application to install from the list in the top-right window
pane.
A description of the application appears in the lower window pane.
4. Repeat the process for any other application(s) you want to install.
5. Click the Apply Changes button.
In no time at all, the new application is available on your system. Usually
applications are added to the Applications menu automatically.
Adding individual packages
Both Ubuntu and Fedora use a separate package-management program to
install individual packages on your system. This section walks you through
installing packages on both Ubuntu and Fedora.
Installing with PackageKit
The same PackageKit program used to install applications is also used to
install individual packages in Fedora. This section walks through these uses
of the KPackageKit application in the Fedora KDE desktop:
1. Choose KDE Menu➪Applications➪System➪Software Management in
the KDE desktop.
The same PackageKit program is used to install both applications and
packages in Fedora. The KPackageKit program for the KDE desktop provides
icons for the different functions. The PackageKit program for the
GNOME desktop handles applications and packages together.
2. Select the Software Management icon in the left side.
The KPackageKit package handler opens, displaying the dialog box for
adding and removing software (as shown in Figure 16-7).
3. Select a package category from the drop-down list on the top-right
side, select a filter from the Filters drop-down list, or enter a package
name in the Search text box.
After selecting the filter criteria, all the packages that match the filter
appear in the right-side window pane. It may take a little while for
PackageKit to retrieve the packages from the Internet.
