Health Literacy<br />
Joy P. Deupree, PhD, CRNP, WHNP-BC<br />
Dr. Joy Deupree is Director of Community Engagement and an Associate<br />
Professor at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) School of<br />
Nursing where she serves as a consultant for research and doctoral studies<br />
with a focus on promotion of health and healthcare for underserved and<br />
vulnerable populations. For 18 years she has taught an interprofessional<br />
campus-wide course and conducts workshops for educational sessions<br />
on the topic of health literacy. Dr. Deupree established the Alliance of<br />
International <strong>Nurses</strong> for Improved Health Literacy in 2012 (an online<br />
forum); the mission of the organization is to advance the health literacy<br />
research agenda by nursing to create successful nursing interventions;<br />
improve quality of patient care for low literate populations; and to promote<br />
educational standards for nurses who care for low literate populations.<br />
Because of her work in health policy and health literacy, Dr. Deupree was<br />
one of 20 nurses nationwide chosen for the highly competitive Robert<br />
Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Executive Fellowship (2014-2017). In 2015,<br />
as a gubernatorial appointee to the Alabama Health Care Improvement<br />
Task Force, Dr. Deupree garnered support for the establishment of the<br />
Alabama Health Literacy Initiative and serves as the Chair of the Initiative.<br />
Previously, Dr. Deupree earned a master’s degree in women’s health<br />
nursing, and a BSN from UAB School of Nursing. She earned her PhD for<br />
Health Promotion/Health Behavior in 2011 via a joint program from the<br />
Schools of Public Health and Health Education at UAB and the School of<br />
Human Studies at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.<br />
