Statement of Intent:<br />
Hello MNA Members. My name is Janie Butts. If elected to the position of<br />
Director of the Council on Nursing Research, my goals will correlate with the<br />
responsibilities of this position. My overall intent is to promote the advancement<br />
of the nursing profession through facilitating research-related activities that, in<br />
the end, will improve the health care of <strong>Mississippi</strong>ans. In so doing, a number of<br />
approaches will include (1) facilitation of social, scientific, and education issues<br />
in health needs of patients, families, and communities; (2) maintenance and<br />
promotion of established standards and methods of research; (3) facilitation<br />
of nursing theory development through the research process; and (4)<br />
dissemination of research findings to nurses, other health care professionals,<br />
and to the consumers of care. I also understand that the Research Council<br />
will sponsor the poster session at the MNA <strong>Convention</strong>. I have a number of<br />
years of experience in coordinating and leading activities to accommodate<br />
research-related presentations and other activities. I have engaged in research<br />
projects intermittently over the years, as well as directed and chaired many<br />
PhD students' dissertation committees. Currently, I am PhD Coordinator of the<br />
PhD in Nursing Program at The University of Southern <strong>Mississippi</strong>.<br />
POSITION OF DIRECTOR, COUNCIL ON HEALTH AFFAIRS<br />

Biographical Profile: The position of Director, Council on Health Affairs requires a highly skilled,<br />
dedicated nurse who desires to advance the practice of health care in a<br />
positive direction for nurses and those for whom we care. Currently, I have<br />
been a practicing RN within the state of <strong>Mississippi</strong> for approximately 38 years.<br />
Nursing has been a passion of mine, and I am dedicated to providing the care<br />
to patients that I would wish to be provided to my family. My nursing skills<br />
have mainly included working within the hospital setting: Intensive Care Unit,<br />
Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Senior Care, and Out-Patient<br />
Surgical Care Unit. Maintaining my skills and advancing my own profession, I<br />
have completed my second Master’s Degree in Nursing Education, graduated<br />
in August, 2016 with a PhD in Nursing Education & Administration at William<br />
Carey University. Recently, I completed the University of Southern <strong>Mississippi</strong><br />
Family Nurse Practitioner program, and have successfully passed my boards<br />
with AANP certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. If elected I will serve<br />
the nurses of <strong>Mississippi</strong> with good faith, hard work, and dedication to making<br />
<strong>Mississippi</strong> a place where the community values nurses and our profession.<br />
Statement of Intent:<br />
“Serving” and being a “servant” to the nurses of the <strong>Mississippi</strong> <strong>Nurses</strong>’<br />
<strong>Association</strong> has been the “Heart” of my intention by representation through<br />
the Director’s position on the Council of Health Affairs. Serving as a member<br />
of the MNA Political Action Committee and as a Past Director of the Health<br />
Affairs Council on the MNA Board for four years has been very rewarding.<br />
In 2013, MNA’s Health Affairs Committee’s focus was on the Patient Protection<br />
and Affordable Care Act legislation and review of the proposed changes to the<br />
<strong>Mississippi</strong> Nurse Practice Act. Over the past several years, we also actively<br />
