SOUTH WOODHAM <strong>FOCUS</strong> 018 South South Woodham Focus Over to you... In response In response to the comments aimed at dog walkers from regular riverside runner Frederick Knighton, stating that he has a right to run without being approached by free running dogs, may I remind him that a footpath is, by definition, a pedestrian walkway. It is not a running track or cycle path and as such, runners and cyclists should be giving way to walkers, not expecting them to move out of the way to let them pass uninterrupted. Remembrance Day Service I would like to say thank you to the British Legion and everyone involved in arranging the Remembrance Day service on Sunday 11th November. The hall was packed to full capacity and it was heart-warming to see the younger generation of the town, from Cubs and Brownies to the older members of youth organizations. The Swift Singers were professional as always, wearing black to show up their red poppies. I loved their medley of 1914-18 war songs, and the dignified way they ended the gathering was inspired. My Dad was in the Medical Corps at Ypres in the Great War - having enlisted at 17! This armistice commemoration meant a lot to me. Joy Wren Fireworks and Runners Most of the sea wall is a permissive path. Pedestrians have right of way and signs state that cyclists should dismount to pass, but this has never happened in my experience. I am a full time dog walker and constantly use Saltcoats, the country park, pavements and alleyways all over town to walk my dogs and those of my customers. I am constantly amazed at the arrogance of runners and cyclists who just expect others to get out of their way, without making any effort to choose another path. I seldom let dogs in my charge off the lead - only the best behaved ones - so I doubt Mr Knighton has ever been molested by my canine companions, but even with dogs on leads and under my control, I still have to get out of the way and I am fed up with it. I suggest that if he chooses to run where people are walking their dogs, he should stop running and walk until he is out of ‘danger’. It is well known that dogs have a chase instinct, so anyone choosing to pass at anything other than walking pace will attract attention. Road running is much safer! Martin Perry In reply to the 2 gentleman who wrote into the Focus concerning runners along the river and fireworks, both of which were doggy-related, I do have to agree with you both. I'm a dog owner and have always held onto my dog when a runner or cyclist approaches as she is super friendly and will either join in with you or sit down in the middle of the path, blocking the way, expecting a tickle! I can however count on less than a couple of fingers, on a very regular basis, how many people thank me for doing so and it infuriates me. I don't do it because she's aggressive but because she's usually wet, muddy and just likes to join in with anyone and everyone. I don't like other people's dogs coming up to me off the lead when they're all wet and muddy and I'm a dog owner! A bit of appreciation and consideration doesn't go amiss in either direction but after seeing the same people on a regular basis who don't thank me, I do say "thank you" or "that's alright" if I'm not thanked to make that cyclist or runner realise that it takes nothing to be polite! As for the fireworks - I agree, this year was particularly bad! Thankfully our dog didn't bat an eyelid (unlike last year but she was still a puppy) but doesn't firework "week" go on longer every year? I realise Marsh Farm haven't done their massive display which I too think has had impact on people holding their own firework parties. I also agree it could all be contained to just one weekend rather than several days or over a week. It's the same at New Year. Why also do fireworks have to be set off so late too? On a couple of evenings last week, fireworks were starting at 9.30 on a school night and last Thursday one was sent up at 11.30pm! I'm not being a party-pooper but I do think the council needs to set some guidelines. Anon
SOUTH WOODHAM <strong>FOCUS</strong> 0 South Woodham Focus South Woodham Focus 19 MALDON DISTRICT COUNCIL SUPPORTS MALDON FOOD PANTRY CHRISTMAS APPEAL Maldon District Council is proud to once again be supporting the Maldon Food Pantry Christmas Appeal, and they are inviting local people to do the same by donating items of festive food to be distributed as food parcels to those most in need in the community. The Council Offices in Princes Road Maldon will act as a collection point for festive food items until Tuesday 11 December. Cllr Henry Bass, Chairman of Maldon District Council, said: "This will be the fourth year that the Council has supported the Maldon Food Pantry and I am delighted that we will be helping them again this year. I hope that the local community will join us in donating festive themed goods such as Christmas crackers, Christmas cake or pudding, mince pies, biscuits, jelly, custard, tinned ham and any kind of chocolate or sweets". In addition to this, items such as nappies, tuna and coffee are always in short supply and would be most welcome. The items donated will be handed over to Maldon Food Pantry where dedicated volunteers make up food parcels which are distributed to local people every week. These extra treats will be given as a seasonal bonus to people in need in our community. If you would like to donate any food items, nappies and coffee, please bring them to Maldon District Council Offices, Princes Road, Maldon, CM9 5DL by 11 December. The offices are open Monday to Thursday 8.30am until 5pm and Fridays 8.30am until 4.30pm. SLEIGH ROUTES SWF 2018 Once again it is this time of year that the Rotary Club of South Woodham Ferrers brings Santa to the streets of the town. (Please see the routes opposite) or see the routes on our web news page @ www.swfrotaryclub.co.uk In order to be able to bring the sleigh over all the routes we are pleased to announce that we have been able to gain help from other Organisations in the town. We thank them all as we are very grateful for their help. Please also note We will stop at the entrance of cul de sacs which are too small to be able turn the sleigh around.
