Royal North Devon is England’s oldest club but it is facing the threat of a serious coastal erosion problem, with no
prospect of being allowed to protect itself with rock armour because it is now against government policy. The 8 th tee
was lost to the sea in early 2018 and the task was to devise a plan that did not degrade the golf experience if at all
possible. Thankfully, such a plan was found and it could be argued that, not only does it provide a long-term solution
for the Club, but it may even improve the course. It involves a new par three 8 th set high on raised ground with
excellent views towards Saunton, up the estuary, out to sea and across the course.
