Hirono Golf Club, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan
In May 2018, the prestigious Hirono Golf Club appointed Mackenzie & Ebert to advise upon its wonderful course
which was designed by Charles Hugh Alison of Colt, Alison & Morrison in 1930. The opportunity to follow in the
footsteps of Charles Hugh Alison in travelling to Japan to provide input to a course which has meant so much to
Japanese golf is a real landmark for the company. It is tremendous that Hirono have the original plans produced by
Mr Alison along with some wonderful photographs of all of the holes. The brief from the Club has been to restore the
original features of the course, especially the playing line of the par 3 13 th hole and the stunning bunkering but also to
make it a test for the best modern day players. Construction begins in January 2019. This includes tree clearance
(although the photographs show that the original course was tree lined) reconstruction and redesign of every green
(the belief is that the contours have been changed over the years), rebuilding every tee and bunker and, in general,
increasing fairway widths towards their former expanse. The course is to be reopened by the end of the 2019.
