JANuARy sTARTs ON The RIghT NOTes
The New Year starts with some great live music acts lined-up at Chelmsford's Civic Theatre and Cramphorn
Studio.
The Illegal Eagles will swoop down and land on the Civic's stage on Saturday 12 January at 7.45pm. The
world's No.1 Eagles tribute has been playing for over 20 years, delighting audiences wherever they perform.
The Illegal Eagles musicians know the Eagles back catalogue inside out and are backed by a stunning light
show and audio visual backdrops. The band will perform the very best of The Eagles, so expect to hear
‘Take it to the Limit', ‘Desperado', and of course ‘Hotel California'.
John Hylton will be reviving the greatest hits of Neil Diamond in his ‘Real Diamond' show which comes to the Civic on Friday 18
January at 7.45pm. Neil Diamond sold over 100 million records during his career, but has now retired. ‘Real Diamond' is now the best
way for fans to appreciate Neil's remarkable songs. The show will feature ‘America', ‘Sweet Caroline' and ‘Forever in Blue Jeans'. The
show will also celebrate Neil's landmark album, ‘The Jazz Singer', so why not come along and say ‘Hello Again' to the only Neil
Diamond tribute in UK theatres.
Fans of prog rock will be heading to the Cramphorn Studio to see and hear Wilson and Wakeman. Whilst they may not be household
names, both musicians have an interesting pedigree. Adam Wakeman is the son of Yes keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman, but has
made a name for himself playing, writing and touring with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath and has also worked with Slash, Travis,
Annie Lennox and many more. Damian Wilson is a respected rock guitarist who played on over 70 albums. Together they formed the
prog rock band Headspace in 2007, and they will be playing songs from their collected repertoire and from those they have worked
with. Catch Wilson and Wakeman on Friday 25 January at 8pm.
January will end with ‘That'll Be The Day' on Thursday 31 January and Friday 1 February at the Civic. The ever popular production
returns with a new show for 2019. That'll Be The Day features the hits of 50s, 60s and 70s, all mixed with the shows trademark humour
and comedy.
The Lunchtime Concerts continue every Wednesday in the Cramphorn Studio at 1pm and offer a delightfully relaxing interlude to
the day. The lunchtime concerts are free, although a donation of £1 is suggested.
To book tickets to see any of these events, visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres or call the Box Office on 01245 606505.
The end of the Autumn term at
Heathcote School has been
exceedingly busy with fun filled
Christmas activities; the delightful
Early Years and Key Stage 1
Nativity, the beautiful Carol
Service at St John’s Church in
Danbury and much much more.
However, we have not just been
enjoying our festivities, we have
been thinking about others too.
The school has been collecting shoe boxes for a local Essex based
charity, British Aid for Deprived Children, which sends aid to disabled
children in the Ukraine. Heathcote has had connections with this
charity for many years and once again, George Mills was
overwhelmed by our support for this important project with a
fantastic 83 shoeboxes filled with small gifts and other practical
essentials.
Furthermore, for the third year running our Key Stage 2 children
were invited to sing at The Meadows Shopping Centre in Chelmsford
to help raise money for the RNIB. The children and staff enjoyed
singing carols for the Christmas shoppers, which also included a carol
written by our Headmistress, Mrs Forgeron. We had many
compliments from passers-by who enjoyed listening to our musical
performances.
Lastly this week the children held a Christmas fayre to raise money
for this year’s school charity, ‘Little Havens Hospice’. The children
organised a tombola, decorating baubles, icing biscuits, name the
reindeer and a treasure hunt. A superb £370 was raised for this vital
cause.
“Genuine poetry can
communicate before it is
understood,” wrote T.S. Eliot.
We are delighted to announce
that our Head Boy, Ben
(pictured below), was
successful in achieving 3rd prize
in the National Schools Poetry
Competition with his poem
entitled ‘Peace’. The result was
announced in the House of
Lords. The competition is
designed to unlock the
potential of young people and
to encourage them to express
their emotions through writing
poetry about peace. Ben has
really demonstrated a real flair
for poetry writing at Heathcote
Preparatory School in Danbury,
producing poems for
significant events including
Remembrance Day and the
Harvest festival.
Notably, last weekend, he
stood up with other children at
the Mission in Danbury to
make a speech and read a
special poem he had written
for this event in support of
keeping the local library open.
Essex County Council is
planning to close a group of
local libraries across the region.
Our school is looking forward
to an exciting and busy Spring
term with lots of upcoming
events; academic, sporting and
musical.
The Heathcote School &
Nursery would like to wish
everyone a Happy New Year.
Mr gees
Foundation
Welcome to 2019
Welcome to 2019 and all that it might bring you, hopefully it
will be a “bonum anno” unlike the Queen in 1992.
2018 has ended with the news that at long last the Charities
Commission has granted Mister Gees Foundation charitable
status. The application process has taken a long and tedious
nineteen month. My next task is to try and get back the money
that has already been given to the tax man, hopefully it will
not take as long.
DID YOU KNOW?
Not only do we
manufacture great
windows and doors,
we 昀 t them in your
area too!
Last year I thanked the group of people who helped get the
shop on Warwick Parade up and running, this year I should like
to acknowledge the dedicated staff that have helped turn the
donations into cash, Pocknells LLP who have generously
prepared the accounts at their own expense and a man called
Mike Farrell of Businesslegal Ltd who finally convinced the
Charity Commissioners that it was not the Foundation that had
bought my new car.
However, once again my thanks must go to everybody who has
so generously supported the shop with their donations and
purchases and also the Village Group who have done their very
best in allocating the funds raised to the village.
Andrew Hemmings (Her Majesty’s Inspector). During the day
they visited lessons, reviewed pupils' progress in their books and
reviewed a range of documentation.
Some of the findings of the inspection include:
● The leadership team has maintained the good quality of
education in the school since the last inspection
● Students make good progress in their A-level studies
● The proportion of students leaving the sixth form and going
into higher education, employment or training is consistently
above average
● Safeguarding is effective and leaders understand and address
the issues which affect pupils at this school
● Pupils told inspectors that they feel safe in school
● Pupils told inspectors they have someone that they can talk to
in school
● Behaviour in lessons is typically good
● Pupils say that bullying is rare and that, if it happens, they are
confident adults will deal with it effectively
● Pupils say that it is a welcoming school where people are
treated equally
● Governors have a strong understanding of the school and
work well with leaders in improving the school
Mike Applewhite, headteacher said:
‘We are very proud of the inspection outcome, and will build on
our strengths to ensure that William de Ferrers continues to
improve for the benefit of our pupils. Our pupils are a
wonderful credit to the school and I would like to give my
personal thanks to all the staff and governors at William de
Ferrers School for all their hard work and commitment.’
The full Ofsted report is available to view on the school’s
website: www.wdf.school .
Chelmsford was shortlisted in the Great Town category along
with Barnsley in South Yorkshire and Paisley in Renfrewshire. All
the finalists were acknowledged for their successes as postindustrial
places.
As part of the judging process, all candidates had to produce a
self-assessment report and organise a visit for the lead assessors.
In August, Chelmsford hosted members of the Academy as part
of the assessment visit, where local business owners, developers
and Council leaders alike all came together to celebrate the fastgrowing,
dynamic, creative city that is Chelmsford.
On Wednesday 7 November, the winners were announced at the
Urbanism Awards Ceremony in London. Paisley pipped
Chelmsford to the post as the Great Town 2019 with their
impressive partnerships and cultural practice.
Councillor Roy Whitehead, Leader of Chelmsford City Council,
said, "Being named as one of three finalists in the country for
such an award is a fantastic recognition of Chelmsford's
reputation as a Great city in which to live, work and play. It also
provides an opportunity to learn and share best practice with
other great places. We do fantastic work here in the city and to
make the shortlist in a competitive award category for the UK's
Greatest Town is an honour."
'TIs The seAsON TO ReCyCLe!
The end of the week sees 12th night and the end of Christ,as for this year, so, if you haven’t recycled all
your christmas waste yet here is a reminder what to deal with it responsibly.
Wrapping paper and Christmas cards
Place non-foil backed wrapping paper and Christmas cards into your Paper Sack for collection or if you live
in a flat, place in your Paper and Card recycling bin.
Remember, any paper/card with glitter cannot be recycled and must be placed in the general waste bin if
you are not re-using them.
Food waste
All food waste, including bones, shells and ‘out-of-date’ food, should be placed in your food waste caddy - so please remember to
recycle your turkey carcases, nut shells and vegetable peelings.
Cardboard
Flatten your cardboard and place in your cardboard sack to be collected. If you run out of room in your sack, flat pack cardboard and
place it next to your cardboard sack. Make sure you place any smaller pieces of cardboard inside a cardboard box, so they do not
blow away. If you live in a flat, please place cardboard into the Paper and Card recycling bin.
Mixed Plastics
Please rinse dirty packaging, squash plastic bottles and put the lids back on. Households can recycle their mixed plastics in plastic
bags provided by the Council. If you live in a flat, please place your mixed plastics into the ‘Plastics’ communal recycling bin.
Please note that Essex County Council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres cannot accept bags of mixed plastics. Only plastic
bottles can be recycled at the Recycling Centres.
Foil, cans, food tins and glass bottles
These items should be placed into your Green Box. In you live in a flat, cans, foil and food tins should be placed inside the communal
bin for cans. Glass bottles and jars should be placed into the glass recycling bin.
Real Christmas Trees
Real Christmas trees can be chopped down and placed in your Brown Bin to be collected (lid must be shut). Alternatively, the Farleigh
Hospice collect real Christmas trees for a donation of £5 in the following postcodes: CM0, CM1, CM2, CM3, CM7, CM8, CM9 and
CM77. For more information and to register your interest visit www.farleighhospice.org/trees or call 01245 457 411.
Christmas collection dates
Remember that your collection days may change over Christmas and the New Year period. Please check your recycling collection
calendar or visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/check-your-bin-day where you can look up your address which will include
any details of alterations.
New Year clear out
If you are having a New Year clear out, then place any small electrical items and old clothing inside your Green Box for collection.
Larger electrical and furniture items can be taken to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre. If you cannot transport larger
items to the Recycling Centre, a bulky
waste collection is available for
residential households. The charge for
this service is £12 for one item, then £6
for each additional item. Visit
www.chelmsford.gov.uk/bins-andrecycling/special-collections
for more
information on this service.
Further details on the Council’s waste
and recycling collection scheme is
available at
www.chelmsford.gov.uk/recycling.
If you would like to request one of
our Recycling ‘Easy Guides’ which
gives further information on what
households can and cannot recycle,
please email
recycling@chelmsford.gov.uk.
For more information on which items
can be taken to Essex County
Council’s Household Waste and
Recycling Centres, please visit
WHEN DRIVING ABROAD
Driving abroad is a much more common fear than I used to think.
Different road laws, different Road signs and the age old fear of
driving everywhere back to front on the wrong side of the road is
something that I share too so. Taking your own car over on the ferry
and using that is an option but having tried that up against renting
one once I'm there, I would now opt to rent any time.
So you suddenly find yourself on the wrong side of the road in the
wrong side of the car. The first thing those not in the know generally
want to ask is are the pedals in the same order and the answer is
yes, exactly as in English cars. However the gear stick is now to your
right and adjusting to that takes a bit of time. Your instinct is to
change gear with your left hand but now the door catch is where
the gear stick used to be and in a lapse of concentration I have
visions of accidentally opening the door, falling out and having to
chase down the road after the car, completely unnerving my
passenger.
A very common mistake is to forget that you must now look left
first at junctions, especially on roundabouts. You see the
roundabout lane closest to you is empty and prepare to pull out
only to have a car whiz by you from a direction you weren't
expecting it to come from. But the biggest fear for us all, the one
about remembering to drive on other side of the road is actually
non founded. Most roads have cars on them all driving on the
correct side and as daft as you may think you are, your brain just will
not allow you to turn into oncoming traffic.
The different road laws are probably the biggest headache.
Obviously the fundamental rules are universal. Obey the Road
signs, stop on Red, go on Green etc. but differences do occur. In
Holland, for instance, on smaller roads, unless the road markings
say otherwise you have to give way to people turning onto your
road from the right. This means you can be driving along and
suddenly someone will just pull out of a right hand turning directly
in front of you. Or indeed, he may try to but because you don't
give way, he will be forced to brake sharply which will cause him to
get very cross indeed.
In Canada though, there are some even more troubling codes of
practise. The stop on Red rule, for instance, although mainly
correct, isn't always. If you are approaching a junction and the light
is red of course, you have to stop. However, if you are turning right
and it's clear to do so you can (and should) go through the red light.
You would not believe how difficult it is to make yourself do such a
thing when it is such a No No everywhere else. But if you don't, the
person behind you will very likely threaten to do something very
destructive to your bottom.
It is a fact that an angry Canadian, as with their American
counterparts will, in almost all situations, prefer the usage of
bottom related threats, except they don't call it a bottom they use
the “A**s” word. They are either going to Kick it, Flay it, Bust it,
Wop it, Bite it, put it on the line, whip it, drive their car into it or
even shoot it. In fact there's very few forms of punishment that your
bottom is exempt from. But on top of that they may also request
that you do things to it yourself, like move it, shift it, loose it, get it
into gear or remove my head from it. Once in a while you may also
be asked to kiss theirs. Although these demands on you can be
made anywhere, they predominantly seem to be reserved for road
use so be aware.
A very good way of receiving one of these threats is to approach a
four way junction without lights, notice that everyone has kindly
stopped to allow you to cross and take them up on the offer. You
may think they are just being nice but in actual fact this is the legal
protocol. At such a junction everyone should stop and the first
person to have arrived then gets to go across first. To just drive
across it, waving to the other drivers and thanking them is a major
risk to the safety of your behind.
The flashing green light for a left turn on a big junction is something
I did like though. This is basically like you just played a joker as, if
it's flashing in your lane, no matter how unsafe it may look you can
rest assured that all other traffic has been halted and the road is
yours to make your manoeuvre without any interruptions. Be quick
though, as it only lasts a few seconds and hesitation will annoy the
driver behind you and we all know what that means.
But speaking about right of way, the Canadian pedestrian has bag
loads of it. Now of course anyone knows you are not supposed to
just run people over whatever country you're in and quite rightly
so, but in Canada it is particularly illegal. Excuses like, “He was
taking too long to cross.” or “She couldn't seem to make up her
mind what she wanted to do.” just don't cut it with the Canadian
police. You don't do it and that's final. And oh, don't the
pedestrians just love it. They take great delight in walking right out
in front of you, not so much on the major highways but in the towns
and especially in car parks you really have to have your whits about
you. It simply isn't up to them to watch out for cars, they just
wander about at their leisure and it is entirely your responsibility to
avoid hitting them.
All in all though, as long as you familiarise yourself with the different
traffic laws in advance and use your common sense, you can
generally get about without incident.
ANDREW BRIGGS 2019 CALENDAR –
THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOS
The Andrew Briggs Calendar is designed and printed by Maypole
Press and can be purchased at their office in South Woodham
Ferrers for only £5. It took Andrew Briggs 2 years to get the pictures
ready for the calendar and details are below, the stories behind
each photo and what
was entailed to capture
it.
January & December –
at last we had snow, and
a 4 hour walk around our
entire town allowed me
to capture snowy scenes
that had not been
possible during the
A frosty morning at the Fenn
previous four/five years.
February – those deep
frosty mornings, and convincing myself to get up and out before
sunrise, then hoping I have picked the right location. The Fenn did
not disappoint as the sun rose.
March – those mornings
when the Sun rises up
from the river are
spectacular, it means a
4:30 to 5:00 alarm and
waiting by the river in the
dark before sunrise, but
when it rises out from the
river ….wow.
Early morning sunrise down by the river
April & June – The
Woods on the top of Radar Hill, somewhat illusive for me until this
year. April bluebells were stunning. June involved a bit more
scrambling through the , woods, and unbeknown to me at the time,
insects disturbed
decided to feast on
me…..I now carry
antihistamines!
May – our wonderful
wildlife. This image
involved a week of
walking round the river
every evening as the
famous “ride a white
swan” only happens on
one day as the parent
swans then force the
cygnets to swim on their
own. Using a long lens,
so as not to disturb them,
I hoped they would look,
and they did.
And the sun broke through – the woods on top of Radar Hill
July – 2 years finding a
right tree that would line
up with a setting sun, on
Ride a White Swan spotted on a river walk.
a cloudless sunset, not
too much to ask. Saw in on a Monday, but had a wide-angle lens
for the sunset, so the tree was far too small, the chance missed. A
second chance in photography is something you rarely get and
Tuesday was cloudy, was the chance gone? Wednesday’s weather
looked promising so I waited at the start of Willow Grove. I could
be seen running down the pavement as the sun came down,
carrying a very large lens, then coming to an abrupt halt. The sun
had lined up and click…got it, at long last.
August – the 4-sister trees, for me there is just something special
about this view, one that I
always look at whenever
passing. For this image
straw bales, good
weather, and a hayfever
tablet!
September – I still
remember shaking as I
took this image, I could
not believe what I was
The straw bales of SWF
seeing. Never have I
seen such a sunset, this the result of Sahara sands in the
atmosphere.
October - the misty
mornings at the river,
getting up super early
and standing in the cold
as the mist floats down
the river and the sun
comes up. I have so many
special memories of
spectacular sunrises at the
water’s edge, and here in
SWF, that early alarm
soon forgotten.
A beautiful misty sunrise down the river
November – sunrises are like fingerprints, all one of a kind. I
posted this one in an international Canon forum and had many
questions asking what part of the orient this was, I replied, it’s in a
small town in Essex!
Andrew says, ”It has been a challenge, and fun capturing the
images, and this is what makes photography such an enjoyable
hobby for me. It can be frustrating but so rewarding and it takes
me to a place where the stress of work is gone. A huge thank you
to everyone for the likes and comments on my images over the
years, and who have bought and will be buying my 2019 calendar,
it is truly humbling”.
South Woodham Ferrers WI December Report
We had a Christmas Lunch at The
Bull in Great Totham, expertly
organised by Shirley. The resident
singer, Glenn Barnes, entertained us
with songs of the 50s and 60s (our
era!) and some Christmas ones as
well. It was a lovely afternoon and
we look forward to more of Shirley’s
excellent outings in 2019. I hear
there are more in the pipeline
already!
Traditionally, the December
Meeting is our Christmas Party and
this year was no exception. We
started an hour earlier than usual
with a delicious lunch, provided by
The Eatery. This included a large
selection of sandwiches, samosas,
spring rolls, prawns, sausage rolls,
crudités and chicken pieces. The
fruit platters were a great hit too.
We had our usual selection of mini
cream cakes afterwards, which
always go down well.
The entertainment was provided by our guest, Karl Jacey
who sang a selection of popular songs originally by ‘Rat
Pack’ singers, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy
Davis Jnr.
We also heard the ever-popular Bobby Darin ‘Mack the
Knife’ tribute as well as songs made famous by Kenny
Rogers, Elvis and more. Karl finished the afternoon with
a selection of Christmas songs to put us in the mood for
the forthcoming festivities.
Once again our ladies were very generous in providing
items to be included in our Christmas Hamper, which was
first prize in the Raffle. It was won by Christine who was
delighted as she has a large family to feed!
The Punter Cup is awarded to the member who gains the
most points during the year in our monthly Competition.
This time it was won by Joy. We were very pleased by
this result, as she came to within one point of winning
last year. Well done Joy!
The ladies of the Committee always make the tea at
Christmas so a big ‘thank you’ to them for that and for
all the help setting up on the day - we couldn’t do it
without you!
The Craft Club will re-start on Tuesday the 8th of January
at 1.30 until 4.00pm in the WI Hall, Guys Farm Road.
Anyone is welcome to join us. You never know, there
could be some mince pies left to go with our cup of tea!
Over to
Over £10,000 raised for Farleigh
hospice …….in just one day!
And oh what a day it was! In June last year over 20 gardens in
Danbury and Little Baddow opened their gates and welcomed
hundreds of visiting, green fingered enthusiasts to explore their
gardens. Over £10,000 was raised on the day for Farleigh
Hospice and £950 from a plant sale which took place in May.
Careless Driver
I would just like to say thank you so much to the person in the
small white vehicle who very kindly damaged the paintwork on
the front offside wing on my car between the hours of 2.00 and
2.30 pm in the ASDA Car Park near the petrol station on Tuesday
18th December 2018 and who then drove off leaving their white
paint behind on my grey car without leaving their contact
details. You know who you are.... This damage is likely to cost
me several hundred pounds to get fixed. My car only has 3000
miles on the clock and damage such as this only depreciates its
value. Perhaps the person responsible would like to telephone
me to let me know how they intend paying for the repair?
and we give you Patricia’s details)
Town Carol service
I would like to say how much I enjoyed the Town Carol Service.
It was well attended. Sad our churches are not full every Sunday.
The school choir was excellent. Well done.
The same again next year please.
Sheila
Thanks Millmark
Thank You Thanks to Millmark Electrical solutions for turning up
promptly and sorting out my lighting without charge it’s good
to know we have such helpful tradesmen in Woodham.
2019 is the 20th year of Open Gardens and we already have 3
new gardens signed up to take part. If you would like to be part
of this wonderful day and open your garden, please contact
Margaret Axon on 01245 222674. This year’s event will take
place on Sunday 9th June, and it is not only a lovely day out for
the whole family, but it can also be a very helpful day! Why? I
hear you saying! Well, if you are having trouble getting
inspiration for a specific part of your garden or you want to
redesign your garden completely but don’t know where to start,
then what better way than having a look at over 20 other
gardens! Our garden owners will be happy to talk about their
lawns, lakes and lavender and hopefully their beautiful gardens
will give you lots of ideas. Many of the gardens also have plants
for sale on the day.
Even if you don’t think gardens are your thing, I’m sure we can
interest you in homemade lunches, afternoon teas, Pimms and
real ale, a miniature railway and much, more for the whole
family.
There is a free hop-on hop-off bus service linking all the gardens,
so all you have to do is park your car in one of the local car parks
and let the bus take you on a tour.
Put it in your diary, Sunday 9th June ……. See you there!
BIg ThANk yOu
I would like to say a big thank you to the kind man who helped
me across the road on Wednesday 12th December when I
had an anxiety attack, hope he had a lovely Christmas.
Volunteers are particularly needed on weekends and
Mondays/Thursdays and Fridays.
Day Centre Assistants - Tiptree
A newly opened Adult Day Care Respite Centre in Tiptree, needs
volunteers to join their team of staff and other volunteers in
to participate in conversation, entertainment and activities and
assisting at meal times. You’ll need enthusiasm and good
listening and communication skills. Hours are weekly on
Mondays from 7th January 2019 between 10 am and 3 pm. This
Volunteers are needed to act as hosts at a social support project.
Harbour is a weekly coffee morning in Maldon on Mondays
between 10 am and 12 noon. The project offers a safe space for
the community to relax over a cup of coffee; chat to others; and
find out about support services. Volunteers must supply two
references and be prepared to undertake a DBS check. If you
have good communication skills, empathy and a friendly manner
this is rewarding role within a friendly team of volunteers.
MaldonSOUP Volunteers
MaldonSOUP offers occasional host soup evenings where, for a
donation on the door, attendees get a bowl of soup and the
opportunity to hear pitches from local organisations. A vote is
taken and the favourite receives the donations. The volunteer
role can include organising the events, preparing soup, helping
with promotion, hosting the events and counting votes. As part
of a team you’ll help prepare simple soups on site for up to 50
Chelmsford City Council has just released the very latest artist's
impressions of the new Riverside Leisure Centre - and it says the
rebuilt complex is going to be one of the greenest and cleanest
in the country.
New images show in more detail than ever before the outside
of the centre, which is set to open to the public in April 2019
after 20 months of construction. Additional funding was granted
earlier this year to improve the green riverside walkways and
cycle paths around the centre, which can be seen for the first
time in the new impressions.
The new leisure complex, which is the Council's biggest ever
investment in the community, was rated 'Very Good' during an
independent environmental assessment known as 'BREEAM'.
That puts it in the top 25% of new non-domestic buildings in the
UK.
Chelmsford City Council is adopting the government's 'Soft
Landings' programme, which means that builders and
contractors will stay involved with the project for some time
after the practical work is completed. Architects Pick Everard and
main contractor Kier will work with the Council for two years
after the new complex has opened to the public, making sure
that it isn't using too much energy and fine-tuning all its systems
so they are energy-efficient during summer and winter.
A combined heat and power unit means that the new Riverside
will generate much of its own electricity, at a fraction of the cost
of buying it from an electricity company. The unit will also act as
the main boiler. While generating electricity, it will also produce
heat, which it uses to supply hot water for the pool, showers,
taps and heating systems.
When the centre needs more power than the combined unit can
provide, the cavalry will arrive in the form of modulating gas
boilers which fire up to meet demand. Because the boilers are
'smart', they only use as much energy as they need at the time.
They will often be working at less than full capacity, meaning
they will last longer and won't waste energy.
Although the new Riverside is heated in an efficient way, visitors
will be warm and comfortable - though if you look around the
airiest and most open part of the centre, you won't see a single
radiator. The main concourse and the walkways that cross it
overhead all have underfloor heating, meaning they stay warm
without any need to heat the air - perfect in an area close to the
main entrance, where fresh air is coming in every time the doors
open.
Smart sensors pick up on the weather outside and control the
heating indoors accordingly, so there will always be the right
amount of warmth for the conditions.
"With the technology and knowledge we now have at our
disposal, we have the opportunity to create a leisure complex
that's as good for the health and fitness of our planet as it is for
human beings. Thanks to clever engineering and great design,
we are building a centre that can serve our city sustainably and
cleanly for the next 60 years - and with beautiful landscaping
and improved paths, we are also encouraging sustainable
transport by helping people to walk or cycle to their activity of
choice."
Keith Prendergast, director at the national property, construction
and infrastructure consultancy Pick Everard said, "We're excited
to be working on the Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre which will
offer the community a new sustainable facility for years to come.
"Riverside's impact on the environment was central to our
designs, having utilised low carbon technology, airtight detailing
and enhanced insulation in order to create a building which
provide carbon reduction and efficient energy use for the life of
the building.
"We are incredibly proud to have designed a building which has
surpassed efficiency standards and look forward to seeing its
completion in the spring."
Ian Gifford, Operations Director for Kier, said, “Working
collaboratively with Chelmsford City Council, we are proud to be
delivering the Riverside Leisure Centre which has been carefully
designed to be as sustainable as possible. We are installing a
number of energy efficient measures that will not only make the
running of the building more cost-effective but it will also
provide a greener legacy for the local community to enjoy for
years to come.”
Even the lighting is efficient. These days, it is standard to use LED
bulbs - but Riverside's lighting will also be intelligently controlled
via sensors, depending on the levels of daylight outside. When
rooms are not in use, their lights will automatically switch off.
Councillor Julia Jeapes, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said, "The
old Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre, which was built in the early
60s, was pretty inefficient compared to the buildings of today.
Since it was built, man has been to the moon, invented the
Internet and become globally aware of climate change!
The after eight social club runs various activities every month of the year including quiz nights,
meals out, coffee evenings, excursions etc.
Christmas in Perspective
“Gaudete in Domino Semper, Iterum Dico Gaudete” Rejoice in the Lord Always, and Again I Say
Rejoice!
Christmas is our Christian festival when the birth of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace is celebrated.
Recently, most parts of the world have experienced an explosion of great joy and intense preparation
for this great event (Christmas). Christmas echoes peace, love, hope, salvation, etc., with Christ as the
protagonist in the play.
To receive the greatest gift (Jesus Christ), enough time has been set aside during Advent for Christians
to prepare themselves spiritually and physically. Tens of thousands of people as part of their
preparations travelled across the globe to meet their family, friends and loved ones to share the joy,
peace and love with them.
Nevertheless, in our spiritual preparations therefore, the Word of God (Jer 33:14-16, 1Thes 3:12-4:2, Lk 21:25-28, 34-36, Bar
5:1-9, Phil 1: 4-6, 8-11, Lk 3:1-6, Zep 3:14-18, Phil 4:4-7, Lk 3:10-18, Mi 5:1-4, Heb 1:1-6, Jn 1:1-18, etc) did give Christians
worldwide an orientation and the methodology in our spiritual preparation and reception of Jesus Christ at Christmas; as the
Messiah, Son of God, Son of David, Redeemer, Liberator, Saviour, Prophet, Priest, Servant and of course as King of the Universe.
With regards to physical preparations, people flocked our shops and supermarkets worldwide. In our case here in South
Woodham Ferrers, our renowned supermarkets such as ASDA, Co-Op, George etc., also did play a vital role in our material
preparation and reception of Christ.
Having prepared, received and celebrated Christ as the Prince of Peace and King of the Universe, we Christians and all other
people of goodwill need to be reminded that Christ’s Kingdom is not of this world.
Unlike other earthly rulers, Christ is not swayed by politics and greed nor by power and the ability to control and dominate
others. Rather, the “Son of Man” (a title which refers to the kingship of Jesus) came as a liberator to free us from slavery and
the bondage of sin and death.
Christ himself is the greatest gift among all our Christmas gifts received at this favourable time and he is in the centre of our
lives. Having received Him, it is appropriate to reflect deeply with acknowledgement what great marvels God has done in our
lives since our birth. Christmas should not just be a time of merry making only, but also a time of thanksgiving. The Prince of
Peace has come to renew and transform us, changing our hearts of stone to those of flesh. As beneficiaries of Christmas, we
are to take off our clothing of; sorrow, hatred, anger, greed, bitterness, gossip, hypocrisy, envy, etc., and put on an amour of
love, peace, hope, faith, joy, forgiveness, sincerity, gentleness, hospitality, humility, simplicity and mutual support of one another
as pilgrims on this earth.
May the new born baby fill us with the grace to be renewed and transformed. Shallom!
Drive through and take away restaurant at
Shaw farm roundabout
I went to the council planning meeting on 18th December to
make my objections to the drive through restaurant intended on
the Shaw Farm roundabout site. I was disappointed to see there
were only 6 people voicing an opinion about this, me included.
Basically the developers and Chelmsford Council by default seem
to be happy to put a traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing
around a close to the Shaw Farm roundabout, this will without
doubt create a problematic situation for traffic flow in both
directions especially as this is a two lane piece of road with a slip
road to the petrol station accidents will happen. Still traffic jams
are ok so long as we can have our fried chicken. I don’t suppose
it matters too much to the developers that children on bikes will
try to cross the dual carriageway, after all, what’s the life of child
when compared to the money to be made by them and
Chelmsford council.
We live in a rural town with a very picturesque approach. I find
SOUTH WOODHAM
the ugly white block with the glaring BP sign a complete let
down and now we are going to have a treetop high neon sign
glowing for miles totally wrecking the entrance to our rural
town. That area really needs landscaping but as usual, no money
in that. It is much better to have a totally nonessential drive
through fast food place with a nice regular tax bill.
Our council can only offer their opinion based on what we the
residents say. The only way we can influence Chelmsford is by
direct contact. Strange to say, the web portal access is down so
we can’t make a representation direct, yet again. If you really
want to do something to influence Chelmsford in to listening is
to write to our town council who, I am assured will pass the
information on.
On another note and just in case you missed it. On Wednesday
January 9th at 7.30 pm there is a meeting at William De Ferrers
School to discuss the future our medical services. It may be
worthwhile finding out just how it is planned that we get from
the residential areas across the Burnham Road safely if you are
of limited mobility and don’t own a car.
NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS. We all make them - and they tend to be
vague e.g. "I'll get more healthy in 2019." We all start out well but, as
time passes, all too many of us fall by the wayside. (I know I do!)
We start from a place which allows huge scope for improvement. Quite
how bad things are depends to an extent on what newspaper you read
and when. Haroon Siddique wrote in The Guardian in Nov 2017 that:
"The UK is the most obese country in western Europe, according to the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Its annual
Health at a Glance report, published on Friday, shows that 26.9% of the
UK population had a body mass index of 30 and above, the official
definition of obesity, in 2015. Only five of the OECD’s 35 member states
had higher levels of obesity, with four outside Europe and one in eastern
Europe.
The OECD’s report, which says obesity in the UK has increased by 92%
since the 1990s, illustrates the scale of the public health challenge, with
fears it could bankrupt the NHS. Tam Fry, chair of the National Obesity
Forum, said: “One could weep over the figures, the result of successive
governments who have, for the last 30 years, done next to nothing to
tackle obesity."
As a nation it's comforting to know that we are beating those pesky
Europeans at some things, I guess - but on a personal level, there is a big
price to pay for our complacency about recognising the importance of
the role of lifestyle when it comes to maintaining good health.
Laura Donnelly wrote in The Telegraph in Sept 2018: "The UK is now the
third fattest nation in Europe – fuelled by its boozy lifestyles, the World
Health Organisation has warned. Research on 53 countries found Britain
rising up the obesity league tables, and among the “world champions”
for alcohol consumption. The WHO said the trends were “alarming” and
threatened to cut short the lives of generations growing up on a diet of
junk food and alcohol.
The study of 900 million people found that only Malta and Turkey have
higher levels of obesity than Britain, which has risen from fifth place, in
just six years. The UK’s alcohol consumption levels are among the highest
in Europe, on a par with countries such as Poland and Latvia, the
international statistics."
So cutting alcohol, which is helping you put on the pounds (as well as
quietly, efficiantly and unobtrusively wrecking livers) is a good move. If
you're planning to live until you're 80 you need your liver to last that
long too - you can't do without it so you're in BIG trouble if it packs up
when you're 70 - and in MASSIVE trouble if it gives up when you're 30).
Alcohol is now reckoned to be a major cause of a large variety of cancers
- including those at the 'exceedingly unpleasant' end of the spectrum -
so this is yet another reason to cut back.
BITTER NOT SWEET. This week's news is that children are consuming their
entire childhood allowance by the time they are 10 ... averaging 13 sugar
cubes a day (when it should be around 5 or less.) Despite fluoride, tooth
decay is still rampant - extraction of rotten teeth is the most common
reason for primary school kids to be hospitalised - and much of the sugar
is 'hidden' in the food they consume.
Our kids sugar consumption also fuels, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart
disease - and it triggers cancers. For a lot of the time their sugar intake
is under the control of their Mums and Dads ... many of whom are slow
to recognise that an element of being "cruel to be kind" has to apply. If
you really hated your kids then you would do your level best to ensure
that they grew up to be unhealthy adults - feeling shite, on bucketfuls
of medication, and in and out of hospitals and doctors surgeries. And
yet this is what a lot of parents who really, really love their kids are doing
unwittingly. Everybody needs to wake up to the risks.
By the way - this killjoy advice applies to you too grandparents! We love
to see the smiles on their little faces when they are given a 'treat' ... but
too may treats does untold damage.
What do the experts say? Public Health England produced a report in
2015 which told us that: "We are eating too much sugar and it is bad for
our health. Consuming too many foods and drinks high in sugar can lead
to weight gain and related health problems, as well as tooth decay.
Almost 25% of adults, 10% of 4 to 5 year olds and 19% of 10 to 11 year
olds in England are obese, with significant numbers also being
overweight. Treating obesity and its consequences alone currently costs
the NHS £5.1bn every year.
Sugar intakes of all population groups are above the recommendations,
contributing between 12 to 15% of energy. Consumption of sugar and
sugar sweetened drinks is particularly high in school age children. It also
tends to be highest among the most disadvantaged who also experience
a higher prevalence of tooth decay and obesity and its health
consequences.
Over the last 30 to 40 years there have been profound changes in our
relationship with food – how we shop and where we eat as well as the
foods available and how they are produced. Food is now more readily
available, more heavily marketed, promoted and advertised and, in real
SOUTH WOODHAM
FOCUS
FOCus ON heALTh
terms, is much cheaper than ever before. All of these nudge us towards
over consumption. The changes have crept up on us and while none of
this is anyone’s fault, it is time to do something about it.
The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) has concluded
that the recommended average population maximum intake of sugar
should be halved: it should not exceed 5% of total dietary energy. SACN
also recommended that consumption of sugar sweetened drinks should
be minimised by both adults and children. By meeting these
recommendations within 10 years we would not only improve an
individual’s quality of life but could save the NHS, based on a
conservative assessment, around £500m every year.
Children in England are exposed to a high volume of marketing and
advertising in many different forms both old (eg TV advertising, radio,
cinema, press and billboards) and new (eg advergames, social media,
online advertising), as well as through sponsorship by food and drinks
companies of TV programmes, public amenities and events. Available
research evidence shows that all forms of marketing consistently
influence food preference, choice and purchasing in children and adults.
Food retail price promotions are more widespread in Britain than
anywhere else in Europe. Foods on promotion account for around 40%
of all expenditure on food and drinks consumed at home. Higher sugar
products are promoted more than other foods. Price promotions increase
the amount of food and drink people buy by around one-fifth. These are
purchases people would not make without the in-store promotions.
They also increase the amount of sugar purchased from higher sugar
foods and drinks by 6% overall and influence purchasing by all
socioeconomic and demographic groups.
Research studies and impact data from countries that have already taken
action suggest that price increases, such as by taxation, can influence
purchasing of sugar sweetened drinks and other high sugar products at
least in the short-term with the effect being larger at higher levels of
taxation."
Progress has been made since this was written ... but not nearly enough.
Something has to be done ... and there is a threat to the food industry
that if radical changes are not made "other measures should be
forthcoming." The aim is to reduce by at least 1/5th the amount of sugar
in foods destined for consumption by kids. There are discussions about
whether or not we need a "pudding tax" on cakes, biscuits (oh no!) and
other 'sugary stuff' ... in other words, do we need to expand the levy
which applies to soft drinks. Sadly we have demonstrated to politicians
that we don't mend our ways if we aren't 'fined' for our bad behaviour
- look, for example, at the tax on alcohol and cigarettes. We learn this
week that over 15 million NHS GP appointments (1 in 20) are wasted in
the UK every year costing the NHS £216 million ... at an average cost of
£30 per appointment (a very conservative figure given the fact that many
young docs work as locums these days because they can charge silly
prices), the total cost of the disruption could pay for the annual salary
of 2,325 full-time GPs. The government has yet to learn the lesson it's
learned about changing behaviour from its attempts to cut alcohol and
tobacco usage - so those of you desperate to get appointments will
continue to be disadvantaged by those who abuse the system.
I digress ... the bottom line is that the answer is much more simple than
many of the popular health gurus would have you believe - it's the usual
lifestyle advice we all know: take more exercise, drink less, stop smoking,
improve your diet etc all of which will pretty much guarantee you will
achieve a 'healthy weight.'
That's enough doom and gloom for this week - but I'll return to the
subject in the next edition.
WE NEED YOUR HELP. One of the biggest and best resolutions you can
make for 2019 is to take an interest/get involved in SWF's healthcare
discussions. Throughout the time I've worked here, SWF has been a loser
when it comes to healthcare provision - and this has happened despite
the best efforts of its healthcare professionals. Although there is now a
glimmer of light, without the help and assistance of the people who use
the NHS - i.e. the patients - the situation will not change significantly for
the better. You need to take it seriously and, at a time of change, make
sure the inequalities are resolved - not just for your own sake but for
that of your friends and family. Watch this space for further details -
and/or contact your practice's PPG.
REMINDER RE IMPORTANT MEETING being held to discuss the health hub
spring Into Action: Council offers free
publicity for sports clubs and activity days
Do you run a club, charity or community group which could help people try or return to a physical activity? Chelmsford City Council
are offering a unique opportunity to promote what you offer – free of charge – and gain new members.
Chelmsford Spring Into Action is a four-month-long festival of activities from March to June 2019. The aim is to encourage more
people to take up a new activity and to continue it after Spring Into Action has ended. Across the Chelmsford area, from the city
centre to Great Leighs and South Woodham Ferrers, organisations who could hold an open day or come-and-try session are invited
to take part.
All participating clubs and groups will benefit from free publicity, including promotion to schools, inclusion on a dedicated website,
press releases, adverts and social media boosts. The City Council can also act as the point of contact for more information, saving you
administration time.
The Council has written to hundreds of local sports clubs asking them to make the most of this opportunity. Councillor Julia Jeapes,
Cabinet Member for Leisure, said, “We’re hearing from clubs of all kinds. Some are already planning to hold try-outs and have-a-go
sessions within the festival period, others are being inspired to hold an all-new event especially for Spring Into Action. The Council
is offering a completely free opportunity to shout about the amazing things your team, group or club do, and it would be wonderful
to see every active organisation in Chelmsford taking part.”
It’s not only sports clubs that are being invited to take part. The definition is broad: as long as you’re based in Chelmsford and are
planning an event that has some element of physical activity, you can get involved. That applies to charities and community groups
too!
Chelmsford City Council would like to hear about charity bike rides, organised walks, open days and fun days which require people
to get active.
Councillor Jeapes added, “Physical activity is hugely important to our health and happiness, but a lot of people are nervous about
doing something for the first time, don’t want to make a financial commitment before trying it out, or simply don’t know what’s
available in their local area. Many local clubs and charities are run on tight budgets by part-time volunteers, so this is a great
opportunity to reach out to Chelmsford residents without the costs and time commitment associated with other forms of promotion
and advertising.”
To take part, you must express your interest by 10 January. There is no commitment at this stage and you don’t need to have a fullyorganised
event ready to go. Just drop an email to Victoria.Russell@chelmsford.gov.uk or call 01245 606684 for more information.
Gordon is desperate to join the Magic Circle, but he knows
that the devious Lord Sleight, its President, has it in for him.
He is told to attend a meeting of the Inner Circle, where he
will be asked to draw one of two marbles from a bag.
One of the marbles will be white, the other black.
If Gordon draws the white marble, he can join. If he draws
the black marble, he will be excluded for life.
The night before the meeting, Gordon hears from his spies
in the Circle that Lord Sleight is going to switch the marbles
at the last minute and make them both black.
What should Gordon do to make sure he can join?
A BIG THANKS to Neil and his helpers for all the gifts collected
in SWF from the amazing local community and delivered on
xmas day to staff and all our residents.
It’s so nice to see community spirit does still exist.
Staff and Residents at Windle Court Care Home
The Inner Circle will then look at the other marble,
see that it is black, and conclude that Gordon has swallowed the
white marble. Lord Sleight will have to accept the decision or he
will be exposed as a cheat!
When he takes the marble out of the bag, Gordon should cover it
with his hand, put it straight into his mouth and swallow it.
ARTIsT sTuDIOs eXPANDeD AT hyLANDs esTATe
Adding to its vibrant community of artists, The Stables at Hylands
Estate, Chelmsford, is being expanded to include an additional
nine studios. The inspiring new studios will range from small
workshops sized from 7.2m² to open plan spaces of up to 30.2m².
All studios will benefit from being part of the artistic community
at Hylands Estate as well as gaining inspiration from the nearby
Repton parkland and the iconic Hylands House.
The new studios will complement the existing eleven studios at
the historic converted Victorian stable block. Michelle Marwood,
assistant manager at Hylands Estate, is excited about the
development. She says: "The Stables are a wonderful
environment for designers, artists and crafts people to work,
display their art, and sell their stunning wares. We already have
established artists working with glass, furniture, illustration and
jewellery, as well as hand knitted designer clothes, screen
printers and bridal hair accessories".
Michelle continued: "The nine new studios will contribute to The
Stables strengthening its position as the creative hub in
Chelmsford where artists can develop their skills, work
collaboratively with each other and thrive in an inspiring
environment".
Artists already producing unique and bespoke items at The
Stables include; Georgia Farrell, a knitting designer who
produces striking geometric designs, jewellery designer Tanya
Krackowizer, abstract painter Mark Johansen, Mona Marnell
who makes a wide variety of contemporary items in glass, as well
as many more artists who all produce beautiful original items.
Many of the artists also run workshops for those looking at
learning a new craft or skill.
The red brick stables date from 1815 and originally
accommodated nine horse and six carriages, whilst the first floor
was used as a hay loft and quarters for the stable staff. As such,
The Stables offers a unique working space for artists and a
treasure trove for visitors to discover. Apart from the artist
studios, the complex also boasts a café, second hand bookshop
and an information point.
The Stables Artist Studios are located close to the Hylands Estate
public car park and the studios are open to the public 11am to
2pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
