In this seminar,
the speech was
about investigating
the portrayal
of women in the
two dominant
forms of cultural
expression in
Iran: Persian poetry
and Iranian
cinema. Concepts such as poetic and cinematic point of views or “gaze” as well as the representation of
gender roles, patriarchy, modernity, democracy and gender equality were discussed by providing examples
from poetry. The discussion further explored the expectations and ideal representation of women
in poetic and filmic discourses in Iran.
The honorary Chair of the Session was Dr. Hossein Banijamali.
He was president and founder of several successful operations, engaged in Petroleum, Energy, and Education.
He received BSc. Degree with Honors from School of Engineering at University of Tehran, and
PhD. Degree in Chemical Engineering from M.I.T.
He was an Assistant Professor at Tehran Polytechnic, as well as Sharif University of Technology in Tehran,
then moved to Canada in 1980.
Dr. Banijamali is a long-lasting member of Kanoon and has served as chair of the board of directors at
Mohandes during the years 1998-2001.
