GEOSCIENTISTS IN
ONTARIO (APGO)

APGO governs the practice of professional
geoscience in Ontario and reports to the Minister
of Northern Development and Mines. The
legislation protects the public and investors by
establishing a regulated association of geoscientists
with the power to admit only qualified
persons, to encourage continuing professional
competence, to discipline members for professional
misconduct and to prevent unqualified
individuals from practising.
DEFINITION
The Act defines a professional geoscientist
as someone who performs any activity that
requires the knowledge, understanding and
application of the principles of geoscience, and
that concerns the safeguarding of the welfare
of the public, life, health or property, including
the natural environment, and who meets the
requirements of membership in the APGO.

geoscientist with APGO are available either online
or can be downloaded from their website,
OR by contacting the office.
MISSION
To protect the public by regulating geoscientists
in Ontario and advancing professional practice.
VISION
To be acknowledged as a trusted and respected
geoscience authority that engages fully qualified
geoscience professionals for the benefit of
geoscience and society.
PRACTISING MEMBER
This membership is required for anyone who
intends to practise professional geoscience in
Ontario, or is already practising geoscience and
using the professional geoscience designation
(e.g. P.Geo., G.P.), or otherwise representing
themselves to the public as a professional geoscientist
in Ontario
TEMPORARY MEMBER
This membership is required for visiting professionals
who intend to practise professional
geoscience in Ontario for a limited duration not
to exceed 12 months
GEOSCIENTIST-IN-TRAINING
This is an internship and mentoring program
for the G.I.T. or an internationally-trained applicant,
during which 48 cumulative months of
required work experience is acquired, including
12 months of Canadian or equivalent work
experience.
STUDENT MEMBER
APGO Student Membership is available to students
enrolled in a geoscience bachelor’s degree
program.
SIX STEPS TO BECOMING A P.GEO.
1.Apply to become a student member of APGO,
2. Use the online Knowledge Requirements
Tool Kit
3. Complete a four year B.Sc. and meet all
knowledge requirements,
4. Apply and become a Geoscientist-in-Training
(GIT). Bonus – students who register to be GITs
within 6 months of graduating get their first
year of GIT fees FREE,
5. Get four years of geoscience work experience
that meets APGO’s requirement, and
6. Register with APGO for P.Geo. designation.
