GEOSCIENTISTS IN<br />

ONTARIO (APGO)<br />

APGO governs the practice of professional<br />

geoscience in Ontario and reports to the Minister<br />

of Northern Development and Mines. The<br />

legislation protects the public and investors by<br />

establishing a regulated association of geoscientists<br />

with the power to admit only qualified<br />

persons, to encourage continuing professional<br />

competence, to discipline members for professional<br />

misconduct and to prevent unqualified<br />

individuals from practising.<br />

DEFINITION<br />

The Act defines a professional geoscientist<br />

as someone who performs any activity that<br />

requires the knowledge, understanding and<br />

application of the principles of geoscience, and<br />

that concerns the safeguarding of the welfare<br />

of the public, life, health or property, including<br />

the natural environment, and who meets the<br />

requirements of membership in the APGO.<br />

Applications for registration as a professional<br />

geoscientist with APGO are available either online<br />

or can be downloaded from their website,<br />

OR by contacting the office.<br />

MISSION<br />

To protect the public by regulating geoscientists<br />

in Ontario and advancing professional practice.<br />

VISION<br />

To be acknowledged as a trusted and respected<br />

geoscience authority that engages fully qualified<br />

geoscience professionals for the benefit of<br />

geoscience and society.<br />

PRACTISING MEMBER<br />

This membership is required for anyone who<br />

intends to practise professional geoscience in<br />

Ontario, or is already practising geoscience and<br />

using the professional geoscience designation<br />

(e.g. P.Geo., G.P.), or otherwise representing<br />

themselves to the public as a professional geoscientist<br />

in Ontario<br />

TEMPORARY MEMBER<br />

This membership is required for visiting professionals<br />

who intend to practise professional<br />

geoscience in Ontario for a limited duration not<br />

to exceed 12 months<br />

GEOSCIENTIST-IN-TRAINING<br />

This is an internship and mentoring program<br />

for the G.I.T. or an internationally-trained applicant,<br />

during which 48 cumulative months of<br />

required work experience is acquired, including<br />

12 months of Canadian or equivalent work<br />

experience.<br />

STUDENT MEMBER<br />

APGO Student Membership is available to students<br />

enrolled in a geoscience bachelor’s degree<br />

program.<br />

SIX STEPS TO BECOMING A P.GEO.<br />

1.Apply to become a student member of APGO,<br />

2. Use the online Knowledge Requirements<br />

Tool Kit<br />

3. Complete a four year B.Sc. and meet all<br />

knowledge requirements,<br />

4. Apply and become a Geoscientist-in-Training<br />

(GIT). Bonus – students who register to be GITs<br />

within 6 months of graduating get their first<br />

year of GIT fees FREE,<br />

5. Get four years of geoscience work experience<br />

that meets APGO’s requirement, and<br />

6. Register with APGO for P.Geo. designation.<br />
