THE ARTS SOCIETY
BRENTWOOD DISTRICT
This is the time of year when we reflect on our previous year and
look ahead to the next year.
Looking back on 2018, our speakers rarely disappoint us but of
course some delight us more than others. We particularly enjoyed
Bertie Pearce’s Charles Dickens, the Man and his Life and Linda
Collins’ Art in Paris 1850-1900: ”The most decadent city in the
World”.
We had a good range of visits, some far, some near. A July visit to
Yorkshire which included Leicester Cathedral, Harrogate and
Saltaire Village showed off England’s countryside at its sunny best.
Vienna’s art and architecture in September were much enjoyed. A
day trip to Watts Gallery in Surrey was fun, as was a shorter trip to
Silver End.
Looking forward to 2019, our speakers promise us a good variety
of topics.
We also have a good mix of visits planned for 2019. In July, we shall
have a three-day trip to enjoy the Castles and Heritage of Kent. A
wide-ranging trip in which art and architecture will be
complemented by visits to a vineyard and to a motor museum.
There will also be a couple of one day trips: one to the churches of
East Anglia and the other to Cambridge.
Our next open meeting will be on Wednesday, 20 March, when
Clare Ford-Wille – one of our popular and regular speakers - will
talk to us on Van Dyck and England. Clare has an honours degree
in History of Art from Birkbeck College, University of London. Her
regular commitments include Centre for Lifelong Learning, London
University, National Gallery, V&A Museum, and a number of other
arts bodies.
Our talks are at the Community Hall, Ingatestone at 7.30 for 8pm,
usually on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Visitors are always
welcome. The entrance fee for visitors is £7. There is plenty of
parking. Full details of our future talks and other activities are on our
website http:// tasbd.org.uk.
If you’d like more information or to ask about our activities,
call our Membership Secretary Diana Bandy on 01277 353178
or our Deputy Chairman Strachan Heppell on 01277 353418.
