It is a fun evening for all ages and nonmembers are welcome. Feel free to make up your own team (maximum of 8 people). Alternatively you can buy just a single ticket or any number of tickets and we will help you join others to make up a team. Please arrive at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start and bring your own drinks, glasses and nibbles. Tickets are still only £8 each and are available from John Allen. CHELmSfORd muSEum ExTENdS ITS OPENINg HOuRS From Monday 4 February, Chelmsford Museum is opening more hours than ever before to help visitors with busy lives. A popular city centre attraction, the Museum is located in the beautiful Oaklands Park on Moulsham Street. Free to visit, it is currently undergoing a major redevelopment, thanks to investment by Chelmsford City Council and £1.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which began in 2018 and is expected to complete this summer. New displays with interactive elements and all-new objects will take visitors on the emotional journey of Chelmsford's long life, from the Ice Age to the granting of city status in 2012 and beyond. You will be able to immerse yourself fully in the stories of your ancestors, trace your local area through history and experience the struggles and successes that made our area what it is today. In advance of the widely-anticipated reopening, the Museum is changing its opening hours to 10am-5pm, seven days a week. Previously, it opened until 4pm weekdays, afternoons only Sundays and was closed on Fridays. Chelmsford City Council is making the change to allow more visitors to enjoy the Museum, whether you are a student popping in after school for homework research, or a family wanting to spend the entire day at the museum and its surrounding parkland. Councillor Susan Sullivan, Cabinet Member for Museums, said, "From feedback, we know that our visitors would like to access the Museum for longer during the week, and this seems the perfect time to extend our opening hours so that more people can access the story of Chelmsford than ever before. ! ingatestone FEB .qxp_Layout 1 29/01/2019 13:50 Page 13 THE PROBUS OF INGATESTONE We started 2019 with an enjoyable lunch at our January meeting. We did not have an after-lunch speaker but Events Organiser Graham Lacey told us about his plans for the year. First on Graham’s list is another walk in an historic part of London, in this case the area around Borough High Street. This would be followed by lunch and then a visit to HMS Belfast. Probably, this would be in March. For later in the year, in response to interest from members, Graham is exploring the prospects of a three day visit to World War I battlefields in France and Belgium. He is also planning one day visits to Windsor Castle and to East Sussex, where we would go to Batemans, the Jacobean house and home of Rudyard Kipling, and then Merriments Gardens. Towards the end of 2019, Graham has in mind a September visit to Chelmsford Races, including a guided tour around the racecourse and then a December visit to the Christmas Market in Bury St Edmunds. That all adds up to another exciting and varied range of visits, matching the excellent end very enjoyable visits we had in 2018. Our first visit of 2018 was to the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in April. This was followed in June by a visit to Dover Castle. Our last excursion of the year was in November, when we had a guided walk around Clerkenwell, followed by lunch and then a visit to the newly opened Postal Museum. Each of the excursions in 2018 was fun in itself. But of course, the day is all the more enjoyable for having been carefully planned in advance by Graham. It does make a difference. Probus Clubs worldwide work to provide regular gatherings for those retired or semi-retired business and professional people who, in retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances with similar interests and who enjoy the company of those having a broadly comparable outlook on life. Lunch meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of each month at the Mount Avenue Banqueting Suite, Hutton, 12.30 pm for 1pm. Often they are followed by a short (ten to fifteen-minutes) talk. New members are always warmly welcomed.
