C. G. Slough founded Midland Map
Company in 1950. Shortly thereafter, Slough
was joined by John Redfern, Jr., Harvey Herd,
Bill Osborn and others as owners. This group
owned and directed the company for 40 years
until 1990.
Although the ownership of the company has
changed, the company’s objective has remained
the same, according to Bob Cast, vice president
and general manager. Cast said that from the
very beginning, the company’s goal has been
very straightforward.
“We started out to provide a good serviceable
product for the oil industry and others, to provide
the landman a starting place for lease
acquisition work and the means for the oil companies
to locate prospects, etc.”
The company started in a tiny office on the
corner of Big Spring and Ohio with three
employees. During the first year of operation,
seven county ownership maps were completed,
and the company began to issue monthly wildcat
maps of the Permian Basin.
In 1957, they installed a reproduction plant,
and began to offer reproduction services
for clients.
Today, Midland Map Company provides
accurate and dependable ownership, base, producing
zone and various other maps for 80
counties in Texas and New Mexico.
Since every change in ownership necessitates
a change on the maps, a title person travels regularly
to the courthouses of the 80 counties to
obtain information from warranty deeds,
oil and gas leases, and other instruments pertaining
to land transactions or status changes.
The drafting department updates the well information
daily.
The present location at 106 N. Marienfeld is
considerably larger than the original office, and
there are 15 employees. Midland Map’s original
attention to product integrity has not changed.
For 47 years Midland Map Company has
produced good hand-drafted maps and provided
fast dependable reproduction service.
