skilled nursing unit was opened. In 1991,
MHMC installed the Varian Clinac 2100C linear
accelerator to provide the latest technology in
radiation therapy at the Allison Cancer Center,
opened the a cardiac catherization lab, and
established the Community Health Care Clinic
for uninsured and underinsured prenatal and
pediatric care.
In 1992, the hospital bought Surgi-Care of
Midland Inc., a freestanding outpatient surgical
center, thus acquiring two additional surgery
suites.
Summer of 1997 saw even more changes to
MHMC. The surgical unit was moved to the
third floor, which more than
doubles the size of the surgical
unit, with eight operating
rooms. The vacated surgical
area will be utilized for a
heart institute, with two cardiovascular
operating rooms
and cardiac catheterization
labs. Texas Tech’s Health
Sciences Center has added
cardiology training as part of
the internal medicine program
available to medical residents
in training at Midland
Memorial. A remote fetal
monitoring system was
added, a gift from the
Hospital Auxiliary, as well as
funds for purchase of a
LORAD StereoGuide® breast
biopsy unit, allowing for biopsies without conventional
surgery. The East Wing’s third floor
rooms were renovated and enlarged to better
meet the needs of patients, visitors and staff.
Memorial Hospital and Medical Center today
is one of Midland’s stellar accomplishments. Yet,
the board is already making plans for 21st century
healthcare, combining the finest in care
with the finest in technology.
Midland should be proud indeed.
