The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
at Broad and Cherry Streets, completed in
1875, is the principal work still standing by
architect Frank Furness. Alone or with
various partners, Furness designed more
than 300 buildings in the Philadelphia area
between about 1866 and 1905. Most of
them were grandiose and doo-daddy
Victorian caprices, and most are gone.
Several Furness banks, churches, railroad
stations and residences can be found here
and there around the city.
