Historic Tulsa

Today ranked among the top 100
universities in the nation, The University of
Tulsa traces its beginnings to Muskogee,
Indian Territory, where the Presbyterian
Church founded it in 1894 as a mission
school for Indian girls.
From these pre-statehood roots grew
Henry Kendall College, which was relocated
to Tulsa in 1907 and re-chartered as The
University of Tulsa (TU) in 1921.
The university’s growing reputation for
excellence reflects not only the vision of its
pioneering benefactors, but also the talents of
its students. In the fall of 2005, TU welcomed
the most outstanding freshman class in
university history, with a record number of
National Merit Scholars (thirteen percent of the
class) and nearly two-thirds of freshmen
ranking in the top ten percent of their high
school graduating classes. These high-achieving
students from throughout the nation were
attracted to Tulsa not only by TU’s reputation,
but also by its emphasis on personal attention:
the average class size is nineteen and the
student-to-faculty ratio is eleven to one.
In keeping with its core values, The
University of Tulsa educates students for a
rapidly changing and increasingly complex
world. TU students come from forty-six states
and sixty-one countries. A growing number of
students live on the university’s two-hundredacre
residential campus, which has expanded
significantly over the past decade.
As a leading producer of experts and
knowledge in a wide range of academic
disciplines, The University of Tulsa has been
internationally recognized for its petroleumengineering
program for more than half a
century. Today this reputation also encompasses
prominent programs in disciplines including
computer science and Native American law.
The university also takes pride in its
intercollegiate athletics program. The
eighteen men and women’s teams that
comprise The University of Tulsa Golden
Hurricane compete in the highest division of
the NCAA. TU’s recent entry into Conference
USA has begun bringing new opponents and
new exposure to the Golden Hurricane.
No profile of The University of Tulsa would
be complete without mentioning the
contributions of its graduates. TU is not
simply an excellent school, but also an
extended community. The university’s
growing alumni network includes chapters in
ten cities: Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Fort
Worth/Arlington, Houston, Kansas City,
Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Tulsa, and
Washington, D.C. This extended community
of alumni brings recognition to TU across the
nation, while providing the partnership and
perspective that have advanced the university
for more than one hundred years.
