Right: Built in 1919, the Sinclair Building at
Fifth and Main Streets was the
headquarters for the billion-dollar oil
company founded by Harry F. Sinclair.
Below: Oklahoma’s first automobile
manufacturing plant opened in 1912. The
Tulsa Automobile Corporation, with T. J.
Hartman as president, built a car called the
“Tulsa Four,” because of its four-cylinder
engine. In 1913, one of the cars finished
ninth in the Indianapolis 500 auto race. The
Tulsa Four was equipped with artillery-type
wood wheels and eleven-inch fenders to
protect the body. An advertisement boasted,
“Note the graceful sweep of the full streamline
body with double cowl and sloping
louvered hood…Unusual leg room in the
front seat and roomy comfort in the rear is
apparent…The air of sturdiness and burly
power is unmistakable.” The Tulsa Chamber
of Commerce bought a touring model of the
Tulsa Four. A plant fire in 1919 hampered
the struggling company which folded after
the 1923 model was produced.
