PLASTIC
FREE P&TG
We hope you had a great Christmas and
that your new year resolutions include
helping us try and save the planet!
The key idea for 2019 is
to REDUCE our
consumption of single
use packaging overall.
Recycling is not enough, we need to make
efforts to avoid single use plastic all together.
Our local butcher Joe Gleeson has started
charging for plastic carrier bags and the next
step is to phase out the plastic vegetable bags in
favour of paper bags. By using our local shops,
we are more in control of what we use and what
we waste (including food).
We would like to thank the Holy Trinity
Church for letting us display a Christmas tree
decorated with the lunchbox rubbish from
TGMS. Whilst we did not win the competition,
it did provide us with the opportunity to show
how much food comes wrapped in single use
plastic in one single lunch sitting…
What’s our next plastic challenge? We are
limited by our own free time and so would like
to welcome volunteers to help us make quicker
progress. If you are interested, please call us on

What’s your next plastic challenge? There
are so many things that need to be done, it can
become overwhelming, so maybe start by trying
a few simple things:
• When going out, try to remember to refuse a
plastic straw. Most of the time, I think about it
once my drink is on the table and then it is too
late, which is so annoying!
• Make sure you keep shopping bags and
plastic containers in your car, so that you can
say NO to bags. When buying meat or fish from
the counter, you can use your own containers

rather than have it wrapped in multiple layers of
plastic, or choose produce without plastic wrap
• Switch from soap dispensers to a bar of
soap, it is so simple!
