Village Voice February/March 2019 CHURCH NEWS Holy Trinity & St Margaret's A huge ‘thank you’ to all those who decorated trees for our Christmas Tree Festival at the beginning of December. We had over 300 visitors. The winner of the vote for the best tree, amongst many amazing and inventive ideas, was the Penn Bellringers with their "Oranges and Lemons" tree - what a lovely idea and a very interesting tree too. The real winner, of course, was Wycombe Homeless Shelter who received the £300 raised. [photo of Bell Ringers Tree attached if required – courtesy of Eddie] It was lovely to see so many of you at our various Christmas services and very special to welcome the First and Middle Schools to St Margaret’s just before the end of term for their Carol and Christingle Services. The schools’ readers and singers were amazing. I have recently, with the help of a friend, been trying to change my guitar playing style. After nearly 40 years of strumming along with hymns and choruses I am attempting to insert some more detail and texture to my playing. I have discovered just how hard it is to change a habit (or teach an old dog new tricks!). In changing one aspect of my playing it seems that everything has got a lot worse. The wisdom of the period of Lent is an opportunity to reflect on the bad habits we have adopted and become familiar with in our own lives. Those habits are often forced upon us by the conditioning and expectations of others but after a while they become part of us. If you cannot readily think of anything in your life that could be improved upon you could always ask a good friend or family member for ideas! The classic ‘I am giving up chocolate for Lent’ is doubtless commendable in reducing one’s sugar intake and weight but it has little to do with the discipline and purpose of Lent. The origin of www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk giving something up was a privation that would serve as a regular reminder of the discipline or habit that one was trying to change. Thus it is just as valid to take something up for Lent where that may be spending more time with a loved one or friends (although one may well have to give something up to make time in the diary – but the giving up is, of course, the means and not the end). Those seeking help in the discipline of exercise or a hobby will join a gym or a class for mutual help and encouragement. The equivalent for Lent is to join a church where you will be able to join other people who are engaged in the discipline of discipline. All of this is exactly the right preparation for Easter where we reflect on the stunning image of the Son of God, the saviour of the world, hung, naked, on a Cross. This challenges just about every notion we have of power, leadership and authority. And that is exactly what God intended. More about our Easter services in the next edition. 9
