<strong>2019</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Nurses</strong> <strong>Association</strong> Annual Convention<br />
DEDICATION<br />
The <strong>2019</strong> ASNA Annual Convention and House of Delegates is<br />
dedicated to Dr. Ellen B. Buckner, Ph.D., RN, CNE, AE-C, FNAP<br />
Dr. Ellen Buckner is the epitome of leadership for <strong>Alabama</strong> nurses<br />
and beyond. She has been a part of the <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Nurses</strong><br />
<strong>Association</strong>’s Leadership Academy since its inception in 2012.<br />
This academy has had a positive impact on building leaders for<br />
the <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Nurses</strong> <strong>Association</strong>, including the current<br />
president, president-elect, immediate past president, and many<br />
district presidents. Three of the current Leadership Academy<br />
steering committee members were also past participants. Two<br />
of the alumni went on to be elected to national offices with the<br />
American <strong>Nurses</strong> <strong>Association</strong>. Many participants have published<br />
articles in The <strong>Alabama</strong> Nurse.<br />
For 2018-19, Dr. Buckner served as President of ASNA District 3.<br />
Teamwork, planning and collaboration are ideals that were put into action<br />
under her leadership. Consequently, District 3 had a banner year in service, membership growth and<br />
engagement.<br />
Dr. Buckner has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and has presented on local, state,<br />
national, and international levels. Her scholarly work focuses on honors education, interprofessional<br />
education, and application of the Roy Adaptation Model. Of note, most of her presentations and<br />
articles have been completed with a team. This fact exemplifies the enduring teamwork qualities she<br />
consistently promotes.<br />
Dr. Buckner has received numerous awards. Her honors include the following:<br />
• Distinguished Scholar and Fellow, Nursing Academy, National Academies of Practice, <strong>2019</strong><br />
• Faculty Excellence in Scholarship, College of Nursing, University of South <strong>Alabama</strong>, 2015<br />
• Cindajo Overton Outstanding Nurse Educator Award, <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Nurses</strong> <strong>Association</strong>, 2015<br />
• NASN/ANF Scholar, National <strong>Association</strong> of School <strong>Nurses</strong>/American <strong>Nurses</strong> Foundation, 2010<br />
• 60 Visionary Leaders, UAB School of Nursing Alumni <strong>Association</strong>, 2010<br />
• Ellen Gregg Ingalls Lifetime Achievement in Teaching, UAB National Alumni <strong>Association</strong>, 2005<br />
Dr. Buckner has served in a faculty role for UAB School of Nursing and University of South <strong>Alabama</strong>,<br />
where she retired with rank of Professor. She developed nursing honors tracks at both institutions and<br />
has consulted with New York University and Texas Women’s University on development of a nursing<br />
honors program. She currently is a Professor of Nursing for Samford University, Birmingham, AL. Dr.<br />
Buckner is involved in her community as a member of Highlands United Methodist Church and Chair<br />
of the <strong>Alabama</strong> Academy of Science’s Gorgas Scholarship program for high school seniors.<br />
