Genevieve Dew & Mark Giovi Together Again By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places If love was money, singers Genevieve Dew and Mark Giovi could retire rich. The two meshed vocally and shared a commitment to community; appearing at endless fund raisers and charitable events as they grew an enormous loyal fan base. From their first duet at the iconic Bootlegger to the night the final curtain fell at the Tap House 15 years later, Dew and Giovi blended their voices to a musical inventory that ran the gamut from the Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody to Motown and opera. They developed a chemistry that produced their duet album From Our Hearts to Yours. The longed-for hope for reunion will be realized when they reunite for a one night tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra September 14 th (See next page). In 1990, the Society of Singers presented Sinatra with their Ella Award named for Fitzgerald. That night, the pair performed Lady Is A Tramp. The Society’s founder, Ginny Mancini, widow of composer Henry Mancini wrote, “A moment that will not be relived again. It was American history.” Dew and Giovi became featured performers and hosts at the Tap House which opened its doors to music Mondays in 2012. Los Angeles Times columnist John Glionna captured the unique vibe crediting it as a “weekly open-mike that’s known for attracting an impromptu collection of seasoned performers. At one point, many of them…have touched the big time.” Dew, a St. Louis native, spent long hours with her grandmother’s friend, Mahalia Jackson, absorbing a culture of operatic gospel. Her singing career began at 17 with the St. Louis Symphony before moving to jazz. Her versatility was reflected in her work with Andrea Bocelli and as a soloist at Rev. Robert Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral. She has also appeared as Billie Holiday in performances at the Smith Center. Vegas PBS profiled her tireless efforts to bring performing and visual arts programs to autistic and Down syndrome children in the special, Our Chest of Dreams (currently available at no charge on YouTube). Giovi grew up in his father’s supper club handling management and maître d responsibilities. He performed with dad Lou for banquets before transitioning to rock bands. The singer, whose left side is locked and somewhat debilitated from cerebral palsy, headed to the western climates to relieve the condition. He landed the lead role in the Stratosphere’s long-running vampire musical, Bite and became a familiar face at local casinos and lounges. Dew and Giovi’s tribute begins at 7:00 pm September 14th at Sun City MacDonald Ranch, 2020 W Horizon Ridge, Henderson.
