Hearst Castle
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Tucked along California’s Santa Lucia
Mountains sits a large estate ringed by oak
and rolling grassland. Vast swaths of undeveloped
country suggests space; cattle graze across sunbleached
hillsides, and beyond is the piercing blue Pacific Ocean. This
is the Hearst property.
The dwelling, known as Hearst Castle, is haunted with history.
Construction began in 1919 and continued for more than twenty years.
Only the finest materials were used. The assembled artwork and
tapestries are rare original works that are occasionally loaned to
museums. Much of the
hand carved furniture
was imported from
around the world and
were antique when
purchased.
Decades before
municipalities began
installing underground
electric lines William
Hearst designed this
method to avoid having
power lines distract his
view. His kitchen was
fitted with compressor driven refrigerators in an era when most people
were fortunate to own an ice box.
Hearst installed four refrigerators - one held food for guests, one for
staff and two for the family. Fruit and produce grown on the grounds
that was not used in the main house was given to staff and to families in
the nearby community of San Simeon. This tradition continues.
The Hearst guest list included politicians such as Winston Churchill
and Hollywood movie stars like Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Humphrey
Bogart and Bing Crosby. With his longtime companion Marion Davies
acting as hostess, Hearst entertained often.
Once completed, the cost to maintain the Hearst estate has been
estimated at $5,000.00 a day. This was not a problem since his
publishing empire was earning $50,000.00 a day.
William Randolph Hearst had five sons and left the bulk of his estate
to them, though he provided an income for Marion Davies. The Hearst
Family deeded 100-acres and the mansion to the State of California.
The more than 3,000-acres remaining are still owned by the Hearst
Family. The cattle raised on the ranch property are sold to Ruth Chris
Steak House. The zebras and other zoo animals on the grounds are also
maintained by the family.
The community of San Simeon has a natural, spectacular beauty
and Hearst Castle, its magnificent jewel is open daily to the public as a
museum.
