Each year, Americans
observe National
Hispanic Heritage
Month from September
15 to October 15,
by celebrating the
histories, cultures
and contributions
of American citizens
whose ancestors came
from Spain, Mexico, the
Caribbean and Central
and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage
Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was
expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover
a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on
October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988,
on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the
anniversary of independence for Latin American countries
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and
Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their
independence days on September 16 and September18,
respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which
is October 12, falls within this 30-day period.
We have included some of the local Hispanic Heritage
Month celebrations scheduled to date in our calendar
of events, and we will continue to update the online
calendar and will share them on social media as they
become available.
If you haven’t experienced much of the local Latin
culture, join in the fun! The activities range from outdoor
festivals like the Gretna Heritage Festival with the brand
new Latino Village this year to elegant soirées such as
the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana’s Gala
at the Intercontinental Hotel. There will also be various
nation’s independence fiestas at local restaurants and
even beauty pageants, and the always fun Carnaval Latino
Celebration with its parade in October.
Use Hispanic Heritage Month as the perfect excuse to
try something new, ask questions about different Latin
American countries and to learn more about your Latino
neighbors.
Kobra´s Mural Brings Louis Armstrong
back to life in New Orleans
Story: Alejandra Guzmán @aleguzman
Photography: Matthew Seymour
Culture builds strong
communities and plays
an important part in the
rejuvenation of cities and
the transformation of the
ordinary into extraordinary.
It also creates a sense of
belonging and pride within a
community.
New Orleans is the example
of a unique American City
that emerged from a crosspollination
of multiple
cultures to create its own. The
manifestations of the city’s
culture can be appreciated in
buildings and spaces, music
and dance, social traditions,
and cuisine. For centuries,
New Orleans artists have
captivated the nation and
the world with their different
forms of art. Residents feel
proud to be part of such a
unique city, and why wouldn’t
we? There is a lot to be proud
of! No other city can call itself
the birthplace of jazz and be
recognized as the bounce
capital of the world.
Louis Armstrong is a
prime example of this.
Nicknamed “Satchmo”
and later “Ambassador
Satch,” Armstrong became
internationally known for his
charismatic stage presence,
trumpet-playing style and
unique voice. He was born
August 4, 1901, in New
Orleans, and every year
the city commemorates his
birthday with the Satchmo
SummerFest, organized by
French Quarter Festivals Inc.
The first annual Satchmo
SummerFest took place on
what would have been his
100th birthday; that same
year, the New Orleans airport
was renamed the Louis
Armstrong International
Airport.
This year´s celebration was
extra special, as globally
known muralist Eduardo
Kobra payed homage to
our city´s cultural icon. On
the week of Armstrong´s
birthday, Kobra finished
a fascinating mural on
the corner of Gravier and
O´Keefe, commissioned by
developers ERG Enterprises
and Kupperman Companies.
His signature style brings
Armstrong to life, using
a collage of bright colors
and geometric shapes in
lieu of natural skin tones
while depicting naturalistic
shadow and light to create a
photorealistic masterwork.
Kobra’s mural has made this
corner the epicenter of color
for the neighborhood and
brought a beloved historical
figure back to life.
Kobra is known for depicting
notable people around the
world, including Russia,
Great Britain, Brazil, Japan,
Switzerland, France, Greece,
Italy, and Mexico, to name a
few. Kobra was born in the
Campo Limpio region, near
Sao Paulo, Brazil. Influenced
by street culture, hip hop,
and graffiti, he has now
taken the world as his stage
to prove that there is equal
value between street art and
fine art. Many believe there is
greater value in street art, as it
contributes to positive urban
transformation, democratizes
art, and has the possibility to
raise awareness on the most
critical social and economic
issues of our time.
¡Until next time!
arte.
Louis Armstrong es un excelente
ejemplo. Apodado “Satchmo” y más
tarde “Embajador Satchmo”, ha sido
reconocido internacionalmente
por su presencia carismática, estilo
musical y su voz única. Nació el 4 de
agosto de 1901 en Nueva Orleans, y
cada año se conmemora su natalicio
con el Satchmo SummerFest,
organizado por el French Quarter
Festivals Inc.
El primer festival se llevó a cabo
en el año en que Armstrong habría
cumplido cien años, y el mismo
año que el aeropuerto de Nueva
Orleans fue renombrado como Louis
Armstrong International Airport.
La celebración de este año 2019 fue
aún más especial, con el homenaje
que le rindió el muralista Eduardo
Kobra a nuestro ícono histórico. En
la semana en que celebramos el
cumpleaños de Armstrong, Kobra
terminó un mural fascinante
en la esquina de Gravier y
O´Keefe.
El mural fue comisionado
por los desarrolladores ERG
Enterprises y Kupperman
Companies. Kobra usó su
estilo emblemático, que
se compone de figuras
geométricas en multicolores
y sombreados, combinado
con un sentido de fotorealismo.
Con su trabajo,
Kobra ha logrado convertir
esta esquina en un epicentro
de color, y ha revivido a
nuestra figura histórica.
Kobra es reconocido por
representar a figuras
notables en todo el mundo.
Su obra puede ser apreciada
en Rusia, El Reino Unido,
Brasil, Japón, Suiza, Francia,
Grecia, Italia y México,
entre otros. Nació en la
región de Campo Limpio,
en las afueras de Sao Paulo,
Brasil. Influenciado por
la cultura callejera, el hip
hop y el grafiti, ahora se ha
posicionado en el escenario
mundial, para demostrar
que es igual de valioso el
arte callejero y el trabajo que
se encuentra en museos y
galerías.
Muchos opinan que hay
un mayor valor en el arte
callejero, ya que contribuye a
una transformación urbana
positiva, democratiza el
arte, y tiene la posibilidad
de crear conciencia sobre
los problemas sociales, y
económicos más críticos de
nuestros tiempos.
¡Hasta la próxima!

microorganismos no son solo
Establishing
Meaningful
Connections
By Carolina Lozada
@be_a_pathfinder
Has this ever happened
to you? You have a
conversation with a
stranger, then find yourself
walking away with a smile
on your face because you
found a new perspective
when you least expected it.
In this edition of Lead-Up,
we examine three words
and the roles they play
in how we interact with
others.
Viva NOLA Magazine - Page 10
Connecting
Connecting with someone usually
involves three factors: who they
are, what they do, and what
they can do for you. You may
not even notice, but the mind
is transactional, and your mind
makes these assessments every
time you interact with someone,
The risk you take when connecting
with people is that you may end
up disconnecting from yourself.
Interacting with others by way
of “connecting” often involves
conversations surrounding
achievements, services, business,
etc., leaving no room for
spontaneous interaction, creativity
or innovation. It’s not surprising
that the process of “connecting”
leaves you feeling drained.
Knowing
When we meet someone, we awaken
a genuine interest in them. Getting
to know someone requires being a
curious and active listener.
Knowing someone is an important
part of what makes us human. It
makes us sensitive, compassionate,
and understanding. It also opens
our minds to learning from
others, generating new ideas, and
discovering new solutions to old
problems.
The value of getting to know others
lies in the discovery of new worlds in
each person. As others get to know
you, they in turn will discover your
world, which will only expand your
horizons.
Being Coherent
Once you connect with and get
to know new people and allow
them to get to know you, you
will begin to generate new ideas,
receive feedback, and create new
experiences.
Be coherent in your words and
actions, and always remember that
every interaction is viewed from all
angles and multiple perspectives.
Plant your seeds while aligning your
actions to your words and you are
sure to reap prosperous harvests.
LEAD-UP TRANSLATION>>
Forma Conexiones
Valiosas
By Carolina Lozada
@be_a_pathfinder
A veces, iniciamos una
conversación al azar,
en el momento y en el
lugar menos esperado,
y terminamos con una
genuina sonrisa, porque
disfrutamos un momento
agradable. ¿Te ha sucedido?
En esta edición de Lead-Up,
hablamos sobre los efectos
de cómo interactuamos con
los demás, en función de las
tres “c”.
Conectar
Conectarse con alguien
generalmente ocurre
rápidamente, y tiene tres
elementos: quién es la
persona, en qué posición o
campo se encuentra y qué
beneficios proporciona.
Conectarse con alguien
ocurre a nivel mental,
y la mente tiende a ser
transaccional. También
puede ser arriesgado,
porque esta interacción
implica conversaciones
sobre logros, servicios,
negocios, etc., lo cual
puede crear una barrera,
porque no deja espacio
para la interacción
espontánea, de forma
creativa e innovadora. No es
sorprendente que después
de pasar un tiempo con
las personas con las que
Viva NOLA Magazine - Page 11
te “conectas”, terminas
sintiéndote agotado,
sin energía, y con un
sentimiento de vacío.
Conocer
Cuando conocemos a
alguien, despertamos
un interés genuino en la
persona con la que estamos
hablando. Conocer a alguien
requiere curiosidad, y que
dejemos de lado nuestros
egos para escuchar desde el
corazón. Las interacciones
con quienes conocemos
son beneficiosas, porque
nos permiten seguir siendo
humanos, ser sensibles y
estar abiertos a aprender
de los demás y, por lo tanto,
es más probable que fluyan
ideas, soluciones y nuevos
aprendizajes. Intenta
realmente conocer gente,
y descubrirás un mundo
nuevo en cada persona.
Ellos descubrirán tu mundo
y expandirán tus horizontes.
Coherencia
Una vez que te conectas y
conoces a nuevas personas
y les permites conocerte
y conocer lo que haces,
comenzarás a generar
nuevas ideas, recibir
comentarios y generar
nuevos negocios.
Al interactuar con los
demás, debemos ser
coherentes y consistentes
con nuestras acciones,
porque la forma en que
actuamos se observa desde
todos los puntos de vista.
Las personas observan
cómo nos comportamos, y
eso trasciende a todos los
frentes: familia, amigos,
clientes, etc.
Tus interacciones deben ser
genuinas.
Planta tus semillas, mientras
actúas coherentemente
con tus palabras y acciones,
y cosecharás abundantes
frutos.
DEPORTE REPORTE
THE SAINTS ARE BACK!
By Mario Jeréz
This has been a long football
offseason in New Orleans. It feels
even weird to say this after the
Saints made it all the way to the
NFC championship game last year,
but we all know what happened
that night.
On offense, Saints fans better enjoy
watching Brees and Payton’s unit
operate while they’re still around.
Entering their fourteenth (!) season
together, the duo still leads the
most electrifying offense in pro
football.
season.
This team has the talent, experience
and mental toughness to win
another championship. If they
can get a little better luck (and
officiating), the Saints will have a
great chance.
A blown call cost the Saints a trip
to the Superbowl. And the clip of
the Rams’ Nickell Robey-Coleman
illegally hitting Tommylee Lewis has
haunted all of us in our nightmares
ever since.
However, if there’s one team in the
NFL that can bounce back, it’s the
New Orleans Saints.
Led by head coach Sean Payton and
legendary quarterback Drew Brees,
this team has character. It also has
championship-quality talent on
both sides of the ball.
I’ll start by mentioning the defense
because the culture on that end has
completely been transformed under
defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.
The days of no.9 having to bail the
Saints out every game are over,
and this team is capable of winning
games on defense. The Saints have
star defensive players on every
level, with Cam Jordan, Demario
Davis and Marshon Lattimore
producing at their position about
as well as any other player in the
league.
The Saints did lose two key players
this offseason. In center, Max Unger
and running back Mark Ingram, and
it’s yet to be seen if the Saints can
replace their production. However,
Payton has lost contributors
before, and he’s rarely had
problems replacing them.
New Orleans signed Latavius
Murray to fill Ingram’s role,
and he’ll be running
behind a much better
offensive line in New
Orleans than the one
he leaves behind in
Minnesota. The Saints
also took Eric McCoy
in the second round of
the 2018 NFL draft, and
the talented rookie is in
the lead for the starting
center spot.
But what I think could really
put the Saints over the top is
the addition of tight end Jared
Cook. Armed with a 6’6 frame,
an elite quarterback and multiple
weapons sharing the field with
him, Cook can be the most
productive tight end in the NFL this
¡REGRESAN LOS SAINTS!
En Nueva
Orleans, esta
ha sido una larga temporada sin fútbol.
Es extraño decirlo, después de que los
Saints llegaron al campeonato de la NFC
la temporada pasada, pero todos ya
sabemos lo que sucedió esa noche.
Una llamada arbitral errónea les costó
a los Saints el viaje al Superbowl. Y el
clip de Nickell Robey-Coleman de los
Rams golpeando ilegalmente a Tommy
Lee Lewis ha estado presente en todas
nuestras pesadillas colectivas desde
entonces.
Orleans Saints.
coordinador defensivo Dennis Allen.
tienen jugadores defensivos estrellas
en todos los niveles, como Cam Jordan,
Demario Davis y Marshon Lattimore,
ganar otro campeonato. Con un poco
de suerte (y arbitraje justo), los Saints
tendrán una gran oportunidad de ganar.

What’s for Lunch?
Packing a Healthier Lunchbox for the
Little Ones
The school year is already starting, and many of us are left
wondering where our summer went! Make the transition
to packing lunches a little more pleasant with some of the
following back-to-school tips.
Offer new
foods
Often, parents become
frustrated with mealtime
battles and fall into a pattern
of sending the same lunch
day after day. To avoid falling
into this trap, offer your child
new foods multiple times
in various ways. It can take
more than ten times of trying
something before your child
eats it! For example, your
child may not like blueberries,
but he/she may enjoy them
in the form of a sugar-free
jam. They may not care for
raw broccoli but may like it
cooked. Does your child spit
out their greens? Try greens
as part of a pesto sauce with
lemon. Changing the method
of preparation and adding
seasonings can be a gamechanger!
Watch the
sugar!
Treats are always appreciated but try
not to make it a daily habit. Try baking
a healthier, homemade option that is
naturally sweet – like banana muffins
– and store them in the freezer for
future lunch-packing.
Skip the juice and provide
water!
Drinking water is essential for the health of our bodies and the health of our
mouths! Fruit juices and sodas are not only sugary but also acidic. Foods high
in sugar and acids can cause damage to teeth while creating the ideal environment
for cavities to develop. Transition from juice to water with mint or a few
strawberries added for flavor.
Have a great school year!
¿Qué hay de almuerzo?
Preparare loncheras más saludables para los pequeños
By Lia Threat
@wellnesswithlia
¡El año escolar ya está comenzando,
y muchos de nosotros nos
preguntamos dónde quedó
nuestro verano! Pero hagamos
más agradable la transición de
vacaciones a escuela, con algunos
consejos para los almuerzos de los
niños.
Ofrecer nuevos alimentos.
loncheras.
¡Evita el jugo y proporciona
agua!
¡El agua potable es esencial para
la salud de nuestros cuerpos y la
salud de nuestras bocas! Los jugos
y refrescos de frutas no solo son
ricos en azúcar, sino que también
tienen alto contenido de ácidos.
Los alimentos azucarados y ácidos
pueden dañar los dientes, al tiempo
que crean el ambiente ideal para el
desarrollo de caries. Cambie el jugo
por el agua con menta, o agregue
algunas fresas para darle sabor.
¡Que tengan un excelente año
escolar!

Breast Milk is the Best
Breast milk is the
Solid foods should
No extra water is
Maternal benefits
diabetes, breast and
• Attend pre-natal classes
• Choose baby-friendly hospitals for
delivery
• Ask for skin-to-skin contact immediately
after birth
• Keep your baby in your room and
weight.
• Steady milk production takes
several days.
• Initially, only small amount of
clear yellow fluid (colostrum) is
produced. Colostrum has antibodies
and white blood cells that
protect your baby against infec-
the
tions.
• Be patient with yourself and your
baby; he/she needs time to learn
to eat.
• Avoid formula supplementation,
unless medically needed.
• No pacifiers; have your baby suck
your breast to produce more milk.
Practical advantages
of breastfeeding: It is
free, always ready at the
right temperature, with
no need for bottles and
sterilizing equipment.
Since fathers do not
have to get up to fix a
bottle in the middle of
the night, they can be of
use for other tasks!
Despite all the
benefits of breast
milk, most mothers
stop breastfeeding
too soon – only 1 in 4
infants is exclusively
breastfed for 6 months.
Moreover, breastfeeding
disparities exist with
lower rates among
African Americans,
young mothers, the
southeastern region of
the U.S., and rural areas
and infants enrolled in
the WIC program.
The most important
stimulus for milk
production is the
sucking by the infant.
If this is interrupted,
milk quantities will
decrease. Problems with
latching, concerns about
the amount of milk
produced, sore breast,
cracked nipples, early
formula feeds, and lack
of hospital, family and
work support are some
of the reasons for early
interruption of breast
feeding.
Breast feeding
contraindications are
few and infrequent.
Ask your doctor about
them.
LA LECHE MATERNA
ES LA MEJOR
Por Arturo S. Gastañaduy MD & Mamatha Ananth MD
A-GPediatrics.com
La leche materna es el alimento ideal
para su bebé. La lactancia materna
exclusiva durante los primeros 6
meses es la forma óptima para
proporcionar buena nutrición
a todos los bebés, y para un
crecimiento y desarrollo saludables.
Los alimentos sólidos deben ser
introducidos a los 6 meses de edad,
con la leche materna constante
hasta el año, o más. No se requiere
agua extra. El único suplemento
Viva NOLA Magazine - Page 17
necesario es la vitamina D.
A diferencia de la fórmula, la
leche materna estimula el sistema
inmunitario del bebé, proveyendo
anticuerpos, glóbulos blancos y
otros elementos que disminuyen el
riesgo y gravedad de infecciones
como resfriados, neumonía,
infecciones del oído, diarrea, etc.
También disminuye el riesgo a
desarrollar alergias, asma, eczema,
obesidad, leucemia y SIDS.
La lactancia materna promueve
la unión madre-hijo, y estimula el
desarrollo cerebral. Los bebés que
son alimentados exclusivamente con
leche materna durante 3 meses o
más, tienen puntajes de inteligencia
más altos.
Los beneficios también son para la
madre. Incluyen menor riesgo de
hipertensión, diabetes, cáncer de
mama y de ovarios, disminución de
la pérdida de sangre después del
Consejos
para las
madres
• Asista a clases prenatales
• Elija hospitales “bebé-amigables”
para el parto
• Pida contacto piel a piel
inmediatamente después del nacimiento
• Mantenga al bebé en su habitación.
Dele de mamar frecuentemente.
• La producción estable de leche
toma varios días.
• Inicialmente, sólo se produce un
poco de líquido amarillo transparente
(calostro).
• El calostro tiene anticuerpos y
glóbulos blancos que protegen a su
bebé contra las infecciones.
• Sea paciente con su bebé y con
usted mismo. Los bebés deben aprender
a comer.
• Evite darle fórmula a menos que
sea médicamente necesario.
• No use chupetes. Haga que su bebé
chupe el pecho para producir más leche.
parto, disminución de
embarazos y retorno
más temprano al peso
que se tenía antes del
embarazo.
Las ventajas prácticas
de la lactancia materna
son varias: es gratuita,
y siempre está lista, a la
temperatura adecuada,
sin botellas y equipos
de esterilización ¡Los
padres no tienen que
preparar una botella
a altas horas de la
madrugada, por lo
que pueden ocupar el
tiempo en otra cosa!
A pesar de todos los
beneficios de la leche
materna, la mayoría de
las madres dejan de
amamantar demasiado
pronto, y sólo uno de
cada cuatro lactantes
recibe exclusivamente
leche materna durante
los primeros seis meses
de vida. Además,
existen disparidades de
lactancia materna con
tasas más bajas entre
los afroamericanos,
madres jóvenes,
del sureste, de las
zonas rurales, y los
bebés inscritos en el
programa WIC.
El estímulo más
importante para la
producción de leche
es la succión del bebé.
Si se interrumpe, la
cantidad de leche
disminuye. Las
principales razones
para esto son las
dificultades para
“prenderse” al pezón,
preocupación sobre
la cantidad de leche
producida, dolor en
las mamas, pezones
agrietados, darle
fórmula al bebé y falta
de apoyo por parte de
la familia, del hospital y
en el trabajo.
Las contraindicaciones
para lactancia
materna son pocas
e infrecuentes.
Pregúntele a su médico
acerca de ellas.
Margarita Bergen,
Social Butterfly
By AnaMaria Bech
It is hard to prove there was a party
if Margarita Bergen was not there.
Her life and personality have
turned her peopleloving
skills
into an
occupation with an exquisite title –
Social Butterfly.
The title is only too apropos. Like
a butterfly flitting from flower to
flower, the ever-colorful Margarita
flits around the city attending
the most lavish parties and
social soirées, always with
one of her signature
hats gracing the crown
of her head. And at
every single event, her
presence is known.
“People tell me the party
doesn’t start until I show
up,” she proudly proclaims.
Margarita
has met
every
mover
and
shaker
in town
since the 80’s. One is easily impressed
by the display of pictures on her
shelves: her smiling face alongside
King Felipe of Spain, George Rodrigue,
Pete Fountain, Celia Cruz, Tony
Bennett, Sean Payton, Hillary Clinton,
and Irma Thomas, to name a few. She
never tires of telling the stories of
her encounters with world-renowned
celebrities like Andy Warhol, Rita
Moreno, and Derek Hough. Every
encounter has a picture, and every
picture has its own story, but her
most cherished one is having met
artist and designer Erté.
The camera changed her life, and not
just because it captured unforgettable
moments with notable people from
around the world. Although she is
known for her impeccable style and
whimsical hats, her most prized
accessory is her camera. “I love taking
pictures of people at the events.
People are so happy to pose for my
camera. They know those pictures
will instantly be shared online as I
check-in [to the event], so they just
love it!” Those same photos are also
featured in her social editing work
for local magazines and her “A Toast
to New Orleans” blog.
Born in the Dominican Republic to a
Cuban father of Norwegian heritage
(hence her decidedly European
surname) and a Dominican mother,
Margarita was praised from a
young age for her beautiful mixed
complexion. Her mother
sparked Margarita’s eye for
fashion and loved to dress
her in the latest trends.
Inspired by Coco Chanel
and Jackie Kennedy, she
also made sure Margarita
was the center of attention
with the iconic Shirley
Temple look. Her love for
the arts was also instilled
in her at a young age. “I
remember sitting on my
daddy’s lap on Sundays
in La Romana in the
Dominican Republic and
listening to the opera on
the Cuban radio station.”
Margarita moved to New
York City in the seventies.
She worked in bilingual
decided to leave New York
and move down to New
Orleans. She helped her
brother, artist Lorenzo
Bergen, open a fine art
gallery in the French
Quarter. They built up
Bergen Galleries and
worked together until she
became the sole proprietor
in the early 80’s. Owning
the gallery was the key to
fully becoming the socialite
she was meant to be.
“People often came to ask
for art donations from the
gallery for their fundraisers
and they gave me tickets to
the most fabulous parties
in town!”
numerous celebrities,
politicians and artists who
passed through the Big
Apple. “I was the token
minority. There wasn’t a
party I wasn’t invited to.
I had to leave my jobs in
education and government
because my co-workers
were jealous that I was
the one who got the
After breaking up with
her then-boyfriend, she
to develop her own style
and add her signature
flair. Her collection of
dresses, costumes, and
wigs is extensive, but her
collection of hats takes the
cake. Over three hundred
hats and fascinators make
for a dazzling display that
gets the spotlight at every
event. In fact, each outfit
begins with the selection
of a hat and ends with her
essential accessories: her
camera and her dog, Lolita
(preceded by the famous
Chiquita), who is also
dressed for the occasion.
As a cultural advocate,
King Felipe of Spain with Margarita Bergen during his visit to New Orleans
for the city’s Tricentennial Celebrations.
Margarita has participated
in several delegations,
boards and committees.
During the administration
of Mayor Barthelemy in
New Orleans, she partook
in cultural missions and
traveled to 17 countries,
including Mexico, Japan,
and Brazil. She was also
appointed to the boards
of the French Market
Corporation and the French
Quarter Festival.
A philanthropist at heart,
Margarita participates in
many local fundraisers to
benefit multiple causes,
including cancer awareness,
Catholic Charities and the
arts. Margarita’s love of
causes and people lead to
the founding of her famous
Roundtable events 14 years
ago. These luncheons, held
at the Bourbon Orleans,
attract all the who’s who in
Louisiana, giving attendees
a perfect opportunity to
mingle, network and make
important connections.
Pete Fountain, Margarita Bergen and George Rodrigue.
Margarita’s buoyant style
makes these luncheons the
events that they are, with
a fabulous 3-course meal,
live entertainment, and of
course champagne.
Margarita shines especially
bright during the city’s
favorite time of year –
Mardi Gras. She dedicates
an entire section of her
closet specifically for her
Mardi Gras costumes, and
has been named queen of
many krewes in past years,
including the Krewe of
Cork and the Mystic Krewe
of Shangri-LA. Even Lolita
became Grand Marshall of
Barkus last year. The social
editor reveals she will be
queen again next year,
though she won’t reveal of
which krewe just yet.
Margarita’s love for New
Orleans drives her to attend
as many events as possible,
though she is a bit more
selective nowadays. “I’m
so lucky to know that when
my name is mentioned,
people immediately smile.
Maybe it’s because of
my bubbliness.” Her final
farewell is already planned
and, of course, includes a
champagne-themed party.
“I want people to say, ‘that
lady knew how to live,
shared everything she had,
and above everything, she
loved the arts.’” No one who
has ever met the fabulous
and darling Margarita
Bergen could ever doubt
that.
Social Butterfly
Por AnaMaria Bech
¡Es difícil demostrar que
hubo una fiesta si Margarita
Bergen no estuvo ahí! Su
vida y su personalidad
convirtieron el amor por las
personas en un estilo de vida
y una ocupación de exquisito
título: Social Butterfly. Como
una mariposa posando de
flor en flor, Margarita va por
la ciudad asistiendo a las
fiestas más lujosas y a las
veladas sociales, siempre
vistiendo trajes coloridos
fuera de este mundo, que
deben incluir su sombrero,
como una corona y su marca
personal. “La gente me dice
vivanolamag.com - Page 24
que la fiesta no comienza
hasta que yo llegue”, dice
con orgullo.
Margarita ha conocido
a todos los líderes de la
región desde los años
80s. Uno se impresiona
fácilmente viendo las fotos
en uno de sus estantes:
Su cara sonriente junto
al rey Felipe de España,
Pete Fountain, George
Rodrigue, Celia Cruz, la
alcaldesa Cantrell, Tony
Bennett, Lindy Boggs, Sean
Payton, Hillary Clinton,
Irma Thomas, Leah Chase y
otros más. Nunca se cansa
de contar las historias
de sus encuentros con
mundialmente reconocidas
celebridades como Andy
Warhol, Rita Moreno,
Hillary Clinton, Mario
López y Derek Hough.
Cada encuentro tiene una
fotografía y cada fotografía
trae su propia historia, pero
la cúspide ha sido conocer
al artista y diseñador Erté.
La cámara fotográfica
cambió su vida. Y no
solo por haber captado
momentos inolvidables
con personajes notables.
Aunque se le conoce por
su impecable vestuario y
fantásticos sombreros, su
accesorio más preciado
es su cámara. “Me encanta
tomar fotos de las personas
en los eventos. La gente
es muy feliz posando
para mis fotos. Saben que
esas fotos se compartirán
instantáneamente en línea
cuando me registre en
el lugar, ¡así que les
encanta!”. Esas fotos
también son el material
de su trabajo de edición
social para revistas
locales y para su blog
“Un brindis a New
Orleans”.
Margarita nació en la
República Dominicana,
de un padre cubano de
herencia noruega; de
ahí su apellido europeo.
Su madre, dominicana.
Margarita era elogiada
por su hermosa tez
mixta en su ciudad y su
madre amaba vestir a
su niña con las últimas
tendencias con el aspecto
icónico de Shirley Temple.
Así su madre sembró el
gusto por
la moda en
Margarita,
quien fue
inspirada
por los
estilos de Coco Chanel y
Jackie Kennedy. Su amor
por las artes fue inculcado
a una edad temprana.
“Recuerdo estar sentada
en las piernas de mi papá,
y escuchar la ópera por la
estación de radio cubana, los
domingos, desde La Romana
en la República Dominicana”.
Margarita se mudó a la
ciudad de Nueva York en
los años setenta. Trabajó
en educación bilingüe y
con el gobierno, mientras
asistía con frecuencia a la
ópera, el teatro, el ballet y
la orquesta sinfónica donde
conoció a numerosas
celebridades, políticos y
artistas que pasaban por
la Gran Manzana. “Yo era
la representante de oro
de las minorías. No había
una fiesta a la que no me
invitaran. Tuve que dejar mis
trabajos en
educación
y gobierno,
porque mis
compañeros
de trabajo
se ponían celosos de que
era a mí a quien invitaban”,
comenta.
Después de romper con su
novio de entonces, decidió
abandonar Nueva York y
mudarse a Nueva Orleans.
Ayudó a su hermano, el
artista Lorenzo Bergen, a
abrir una galería de bellas
artes en el Barrio Francés.
Construyeron las Galerías
Bergen, y trabajaron juntos
durante unos años, hasta
que Margarita se convirtió
en la única propietaria, a
principios de los años 80´s.
Ser dueña de la galería fue
la clave para convertirse
de lleno en la socialité que
estaba destinada a ser.
“¡La gente a menudo venía
a pedir donaciones de arte
de la galería para recaudar
fondos en sus eventos, y me
regalaban boletos para las
fiestas más fabulosas de la
ciudad!”
Influenciada por su madre
en el amor a la moda,
Margarita desarrolló su
propio estilo. Su colección
de vestidos, disfraces y
pelucas es extensa, pero
su colección de los más
de trescientos sombreros
y tocados crean una
admirable exhibición que
resalta en cada evento.
Para escoger su atuendo,
primero, elige el sombrero
y lo termina con sus
accesorios esenciales: su
cámara, y su perra, Lolita
(precedida por la famosa
Chiquita) que siempre llega
vestida para la ocasión.
Como defensora del arte
Margarita ha participado
en diversas delegaciones,
juntas directivas y comités.
Durante la administración
del alcalde Barthelemy en
Nueva Orleans, participó
en misiones culturales, y
viajó a 17 países, incluidos
México, Japón y Brasil,
entre otros. También fue
nombrada miembro de
las juntas directivas de la
French Market Corporation
y el French Quarter
Festival.
Como filántropa de
corazón, Margarita
participa en varios eventos
de beneficencia locales
para causas diversas, que
incluyen luchas contra
el cáncer, Caridades
Católicas, y las artes. Su
amor por estas causas
y por la gente la llevó a
fundar famosos eventos
de Mesa Redonda hace
14 años. Estos almuerzos
toman lugar en el hotel
Bourbon Orleans y
proveen una oportunidad
para que los asistentes
se conozcan y creen
conexiones importantes.
Su personalidad hace
que estos eventos de
almuerzo de tres tiempos,
entretenimiento en vivo, y
por supuesto, champaña
sean extra especiales.
Margarita lleva un brillo
especial durante su época
favorita del año en la
ciudad: el Mardi Gras.
Ella dedica una sección
especial en su armario
para sus disfraces y ha
sido la reina de varios
Viva NOLA Magazine - Page 26
desfiles que incluyen
Krewe de Cork y la Mystic
Krewe de Shangri-LA.
Incluso, Lolita se convirtió
en Gran Mariscal de
Barkus, el año pasado.
La editora social revela
que volverá a ser reina
el próximo año, aunque
aún mantiene el krewe
en secreto.
El amor de Margarita
por Nueva Orleans la
lleva a asistir a cuantos
eventos pueda, aunque
hoy en día es cada vez
más selectiva. “Tengo
mucha suerte de saber
que cuando se menciona
mi nombre, la gente
inmediatamente sonríe.
Tal vez sea por mi
efervescencia”.
Ella sabe que su
despedida final será
en una fiesta temática
con champaña, y ya la
tiene planeada. “Quiero
que la gente diga: ‘esa
señora sabía cómo vivir,
compartía todo lo que
tenía y, sobre todo, amaba
las artes’”. Y esto jamás
podrá cuestionarlo nadie
Beignets and
Sopapillas
By Marcella Escarfuller
@Bubblegumcatering
Hispanic Heritage Month is fast
upon us, which has me thinking
about one of the most delicious fried
dishes out there – sopapillas. They
are such a staple in Hispanic culture
that many Latin American countries
have their own take on sopapillas.
Not to mention that these beautiful
honey-soaked, sugar-covered pillows
are undeniably similar to New
Viva NOLA Magazine - Page 28
Orleans’ beloved beignets. For those
you will notice that sopapillas
are light and flaky, while
beignets are soft and doughy.
unfamiliar with sopapillas, they are
squares or rounds of fried dough
made from simple choux pastry, with
the addition of a leavening agent,
such as baking powder. The word
sopapilla (also sopaipilla or sopaipa)
was introduced to the Spanish
language in medieval Spain, from the
Mozarabic language of Al-Andalus
(the then-Muslim-controlled Iberian
Peninsula). The Mozarabic word,
xopaipa, meaning bread soaked in oil,
was derived in turn from the ancient
Germanic word suppa (literally bread
soaked in liquid).
Unlike sopapillas, beignets are made
from yeast dough. And that’s pretty
much the only difference between
the two. That’s why you’ll notice
that sopapillas are light and flaky,
while beignets are soft and doughy
through and through, just like your
traditional American doughnut.
The word beignet (literally fritter
in French) comes from the early
Celtic word bigne, meaning to rise.
Beignets have been associated with
French Mardi Gras since the 16 th
century. Prior to that, beignets were
introduced into Mediterranean
France in the Middle Ages through
Andalusia, which was under Islamic
rule at the time. REFRESHER ALERT
(just to make sure you’re paying
attention): this was around the same
time that the sopapilla was popping
up in Spain.
It is said that the beignet first made
landfall in New Orleans in the 18 th
century, brought over to the great
port city by French colonists. It even
became the official state doughnut
of Louisiana in 1986, well over 200
after its introduction to New Orleans.
Beignets and sopapillas have their
savory side, too. Many variations
include fillings like ground beef,
avocado, mustard, ketchup, and
garlic. Local restaurants take their
savory beignet game to the next
level with La Petit Grocery’s Blue
Crab Beignets and Restaurant
R’evolution’s Beer-Battered Crab
Beignets.
But of course, we all crave our classic
New Orleans beignets with that
signature dusting of powdered sugar
on top. Café du Monde is of course
the original (the coffee stand was
established in 1862 and still remains
the Beignet Boss), but it’s worth
considering other local joints that
bring their own NOLA flare to these
irresistible pockets of heaven – like
new kids on the block, The Vintage,
on Magazine; Café Beignet on Royal
Street; and New Orleans Coffee &
Beignet Co. on St. Charles.
Sopapillas are just as easy to find –
just go to your favorite Latin joint like
Nacho Mama’s in Elmwood, Superior
Grill on St. Charles, or La Carreta on
Magazine. So, in honor of Hispanic
Heritage Month in NOLA, the next
time you eat a beignet, call it a
sopapilla, and vice versa. Now you
know it’s not that much of a stretch.
And to top this off, coincidence or
not, the Beignet Fest takes place
in our city in the beginning of
October since four years ago. Make
sure you check out the 4th Annual
Beignet Fest presented by French
Market ® Coffee on Saturday, October
5, 2019 from 10AM – 6PM at the
Festival Grounds at City Park.
NOLA FOOD TRANSLATION>>
Beignets y
Sopapillas
El Mes de la Herencia Hispana ya
está aquí, lo cual me hace pensar
en uno de los platos fritos más
deliciosos: las sopapillas.
Las sopapillas son un elemento
básico en la cultura hispana y
muchos países latinoamericanos
tienen su propia versión de las
mismas. Esto sin mencionar que
estas hermosas almohadillas
bañadas en miel y cubiertas de
azúcar son innegablemente similares
a los adorados beignets de Nueva
Orleans.
Para aquellos que no están
familiarizados con las sopapillas,
son cuadros o bolas de masa frita,
hecha de simple pasta choux, con la
adición de un agente leudante, como
el polvo de hornear. La palabra
sopapilla (también sopaipilla o
sopaipa) se introdujo en el idioma
español en la España medieval, del
idioma mozárabe de Al-Andalus
(la península ibérica controlada
por musulmanes). La palabra
Viva NOLA Magazine - Page 30
Por Marcella Escarfuller
mozárabe, xopaipa, que significa pan
empapado en aceite, se deriva a su
vez de la antigua palabra germánica
suppa (literalmente, pan empapado
en líquido).
A diferencia de las sopapillas, los
beignets están hechos de masa de
levadura, y esa es prácticamente
la única diferencia entre los dos.
Es por eso que notarás que las
sopapillas son ligeras y escamosas,
mientras que los beignets son
suaves y pastosos por todos lados,
al igual que la dona tradicional
estadounidense.
La palabra beignet (literalmente
fritter, en francés) proviene de la
primera palabra celta bigne, que
significa elevarse.
franceses. Incluso, se convirtió en la
dona oficial del estado de Louisiana
en 1986, más de 200 años después
de su llegada a Nueva Orleans.
Los beignets y las sopapillas también
tienen su lado sabroso. Muchas
variaciones incluyen algunos
rellenos, como carne molida,
aguacate, mostaza, ketchup y ajo.
Los restaurantes locales llevan sus
sabrosas presentaciones de beignet
al siguiente nivel, con los Beignets de
cangrejo azul, de La Petit Grocery, y
los Beignets de cangrejo rebozados
con cerveza, del Restaurant
R’evolution.
Pero, por supuesto, todos
anhelamos nuestros
clásicos beignets de
Nueva Orleans con
azúcar en polvo en la
parte superior. El Café du
Monde es, por supuesto,
el original (el puesto de
café se estableció en
1862, y sigue siendo el
Jefe Beignet), pero vale
la pena considerar otras
articulaciones locales que
traen su propio estilo
de New Orleans a estas
irresistibles nubes con
azúcar – como los nuevos
integrantes del vecindario:
The Vintage, en Magazine;
Café Beignet en Royal
Street; y New Orleans
Coffee & Beignet Co. en la
avenida St. Charles.
Las sopapillas son igual
de fáciles de encontrar:
simplemente vaya a su
restaurante latino favorito,
como Nacho Mama’s en
Elmwood, Superior Grill
en St. Charles o La Carreta
en Magazine. Y entonces,
en honor al Mes de la
Herencia Hispana en New
Orleans, la próxima vez
que comas un beignet,
llámalo sopapilla y
viceversa. Ahora ya sabes
que no es una exageración.
Y además, coincidencia
o no, desde hace cuatro
años se celebra el festival
del beignet a principios de
octubre, que cabe dentro
de la celebración del Mes
de la Herencia Hispana.
Este año tendrá lugar el
sábado 5 de octubre de
10a.m. a 6p.m. en el City
Park de Nueva Orleans.
