British Columbia interior stage industry,<br />
the British Columbia low-budget film<br />
industry and the Quebec regional stage<br />
industry.<br />
Organizing Successes<br />
Local 58 Toronto – Stage<br />
In April <strong>2019</strong>, Local 58 was certified<br />
as the bargaining agent for stagehands<br />
working at the Tarragon Theatre which<br />
houses a 205-seat mainspace and 113-<br />
seat extra space facility. Of particular<br />
note is the fact that the certification was<br />
the first all female bargaining unit certification<br />
in the Local’s history.<br />
In May <strong>2019</strong>, Local 58 was certified<br />
as the bargaining agent for stagehands<br />
working at Harbourfront’s five stages –<br />
the Concert Stage, Stage in the Round,<br />
Brigantine Room, Studio Theatre and<br />
Lakeside Terrace.<br />
Local 118 Vancouver – Stage<br />
Local 118 identified a number of organizing<br />
targets on Grandville Island in<br />
British Columbia. With the assistance<br />
of the International and Representative<br />
Neville, Local 118 filed applications for<br />
certification for Boca del Lupo, Carousel<br />
Theatre for Young People and the Granville<br />
Island Theatre District Society and<br />
a common employer application covering<br />
all three corporate entities. After<br />
dispensing with a number of challenges<br />
by the theatres and the withdrawal of its<br />
related employer application, Local 118<br />
was certified exclusive bargaining agent<br />
for Boca del Lupo in March <strong>2019</strong> and<br />
Carousel Theatre for Young People and<br />
Granville Island Theatre District Society<br />
in April <strong>2019</strong>. Local 118 has since commenced<br />
bargaining for first collective<br />
agreements with each theatre with the<br />
assistance of Representative Neville.<br />
Local 212 Calgary – Stage<br />
In 2008, Local 212 organized Theatre<br />
Junction which managed a resident<br />
company in the 440-seat Grand Theatre<br />
located in downtown Calgary. In 2018,<br />
Theatre Junction ceased operating and<br />
left the premises and was replaced by<br />
Calgary Grand Theatre Society. In May<br />
<strong>2019</strong>, Local 212 was able to secure a voluntary<br />
successorship agreement with<br />
CGTS and thereafter negotiate a renewal<br />
collective agreement which included significant<br />
wage increases for department<br />
heads and crew respectively as well as<br />
signing bonuses.<br />
Local 709 Newfoundland & Labrador -<br />
Mixed<br />
In late 2018, Local 709 was approached<br />
by non-union accountants<br />
working in the film industry in the province<br />
of Newfoundland and Labrador.<br />
With the assistance of Representative<br />
DaPrato and Canadian Counsel Schirru,<br />
the Local brought the accountants into<br />
membership and have since included<br />
them in its promulgated collective agreement.<br />
The Local looks forward to these<br />
accountants working under the terms<br />
and conditions of its collective agreement<br />
on two new productions scheduled<br />
to commence production in the province<br />
in the near future.<br />
Bargaining<br />
Vice President Lewis reported that<br />
there are several active and ongoing<br />
collective bargaining agreement negotiations<br />
in which the International is assisting<br />
Locals. The Canadian Office has<br />
placed an emphasis on assisting Locals<br />
to get the bargaining table and to settle a<br />
first collective agreement faster following<br />
a successful organizing drive so as not to<br />
lose momentum and support of the affected<br />
employees. The Canadian Office<br />
is assisting in twenty-eight separate negotiations<br />
involving seventeen Locals. A<br />
number of the bargaining assignments<br />
are still open and were not reported on.<br />
Some of the concluded assignments are<br />
summarised below.<br />
Local 63 Winnipeg – Mixed<br />
In March <strong>2019</strong>, Representative Brett<br />
assisted Local 63 in concluding a successor<br />
collective agreement with Rainbow<br />
Stage which operates a large outdoor theatrical<br />
facility in Winnipeg. Highlights of<br />
the agreement include wage parity for all<br />
heads of department, the introduction<br />
of an employer contribution to the Local’s<br />
health plan and wage increases for<br />
all classifications.<br />
Local 210 Edmonton – Stage<br />
Representative Brett assisted Local<br />
210 in negotiating a renewal collective<br />
agreement with the Oilers Entertainment<br />
Group covering the Rogers Arena,<br />
the home of the Edmonton Oilers.<br />
Representative Brett’s assistance in this<br />
regard follows up on his previous efforts<br />
to assist the Local in organizing<br />
the venue and securing a first collective<br />
agreement three years ago. Highlights of<br />
the renewal collective agreement include<br />
annual wage increases over the life of the<br />
agreement.<br />
Local 262 Montreal - Operators<br />
As previously reported, Local 262 organized<br />
the ushers, concessions workers<br />
and ticket takers at the Cineplex Mega-<br />
